Malak Al-Kashif
Malak al-Kashif (born 1 November 1999) is an Egyptian human rights and LGBT rights activist. Al-Kashif is the first known openly transgender Egyptian to be arrested for political reasons. Early life Al-Kashif was raised in a religious household in Cairo, alongside two older sisters and a brother. She memorized parts of the Quran as a child. As a child, al-Kashif felt more comfortable around girls than boys. At age 6, she had recurring dreams in which she wore a wedding dress. Al-Kashif first learned about transgender people through a negative comment made by her sister about actress Hanan El Tawil, Hanan al-Tawil, the first openly transgender Egyptian actress. At age nine, al-Kashif told her parents that she was a girl; in response, her father beat her. Deadnaming
Deadnaming is the act of calling a transgender or non-binary person by their birth name after they have chosen a new name. Many transgender people change names as part of gender transition, and wish for their former name (''deadname'') to be kept private. Deadnaming has the effect of misgendering its subject, and potentially outing them as transgender. It may occur accidentally, or be done as a deliberate attempt to deny, mock, or invalidate a person's gender identity. Deliberately using a transgender person's deadname is considered offensive. Trans people may face bureaucratic obstacles in changing their names. Published authors and media figures who have later transitioned may be troubled by the appearance of their former name in metadata records, which can be difficult to change. Hanan El Tawil
Hanan El Tawil (also spelled Hannan Eltaweil and Hanan El Taweil; , February 12, 1966 in Sinnuris, Faiyum – December 1, 2004 in Cairo) was an Egyptian actress who played roles in cinema, comedy, and theater. She was the first transgender actress in Egypt. Her death in 2004 is speculated to be a suicide due to mental illness exacerbated by frequent harassment.
