Mahone Bay
Mahone Bay is a bay on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada along the eastern end of Lunenburg County. The bay has many islands, and is a popular sailing area. Since 2003 the Mahone Islands Conservation Association has been working to protect the natural environment of the bay. The bay and its islands contain a variety of habitats including forests, rocky shores, beaches, wetlands, and mudflats. Wildlife in the area include black guillemots, eagles, osprey, leach's storm petrels, puffins, razorbills, and great blue herons. History The area was first inhabited by the indigenous Mi'kmaq. The first Europeans in the area were the French, the early maps of whom labelled the bay as ''La Baye de Toutes Iles'' (The Bay of Many Islands). The current name derives from the French ''mahonne'', a type of barge. In 1754 the British brought German speakers from Europe to colonize the area, starting in Lunenburg. Pogue is American pejorative military slang for non-infantry MOS (military occupational specialty) staff, and other rear-echelon or support units. History and etymology The term was used as early as the First World War by US Marines to refer to a male homosexual. At the beginning of World War II, "pogue" was used by Marine drill instructors to refer to trainees believed not to meet the expected standards or failing to display the appropriate ''esprit de corps''. Linda Reinberg includes it as being in general use in Vietnam to refer to rear echelon support personnel. This meaning, as well as the "substandard performance" connotation, continued into the beginning of the Global War on Terror. During Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, "pog" referred to anyone who arrived in theater after the speaker. The Mahones
The Mahones are a Canadian Irish punk band, formed on St. Patrick's Day in 1990, in Kingston, Ontario. Biography The Mahones were formed in 1990 by Dublin-born Finny McConnell, as a one-off band for a St. Patrick's Day party. Encouraged by a positive reception, McConnell decided to pursue the band full-time. The Mahones have released thirteen albums to date with their most recent, ''Jameson Street'', being released in 2022 being named the top celtic punk album of the year and have continually received high praise for their energetic live show ever since. Club de Fútbol Sporting Mahonés was a Spanish football team based in Mahón, Menorca, in the autonomous community of Balearic Islands prior to its 2012 dissolution. The club has a successor called ''Sporting Mahón'' in the local Menorcan league. C.F. Sporting Mahonés resulted from the merger of two other Mahon teams, Club Deportivo Menorca and Union Deportiva Mahon, in July 1974. They began life in the regional divisions of Balearic football before progressing to the Spanish Third Division in 1977–78. On 24 January 2012 the team announced it was withdrawing from the Segunda División B – Group 3, in mid-season, due to the fact that practically all the professional squad had left the club. Alexander "Alex" Mahone is a fictional character portrayed by William Fichtner in the American television series ''Prison Break''. Mahone is introduced in the premiere of the second season as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, specializing in manhunts for escaped prisoners for 14 years. The Pogues
The Pogues were an English or Anglo-Irish Celtic punk band fronted by Shane MacGowan and others, founded in Kings Cross, London in 1982, as "Pogue Mahone" – the anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic ''póg mo thóin'', meaning "kiss my arse". The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s, recording several hit albums and singles. MacGowan left the band in 1991 owing to drinking problems, but the band continued – first with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals – before breaking up in 1996. The Pogues re-formed in late 2001, and played regularly across the UK and Ireland and on the US East Coast, until dissolving again in 2014. Mahone Bay is a town on the northwest shore of Mahone Bay along the South Shore of Nova Scotia in Lunenburg County.
