Madonna And Child With Cherubs
''Madonna and Child with Cherubs'' or ''The Virgin and the Child with Angels'' is an oil painting by the Italian Mannerist painter Rosso Fiorentino, created between 1512 and 1517. Originally on panel, it was later transferred to canvas. It was acquired in 1810 in Paris with help from the baron Dominique Vivant Denon for the Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg, where it now hangs. The composition draws on models by Fra Bartolomeo and the pyramidical group owes much to Michelangelo. It is also reminiscent of Fiorentino's own ''Assumption of the Virgin'', first painted in 1512–1513 and retouched or repainted in 1517. Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (8 March 1495 in Gregorian style, or 1494 according to the calculation of times in Florence where the year began on 25 March – 14 November 1540), known as Rosso Fiorentino (meaning "Red Florentine" in Italian), or Il Rosso, was an Italian Mannerist painter who worked in oil and fresco and belonged to the Florentine school. Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon (4 January 1747 – 27 April 1825) was a French artist, writer, diplomat, author, and archaeologist. Denon was a diplomat for France under Louis XV and Louis XVI. He was appointed as the first Director of the Louvre museum by Napoleon after the Egyptian campaign of 1798–1801, and is commemorated in the Denon Wing of the modern museum and in the Dominique-Vivant Denon Research Center. Fra Bartolomeo or Bartolommeo (, , ; 28 March 1472 – 31 October 1517), also known as Bartolommeo di Pagholo, Bartolommeo di S. Marco, and his original nickname Baccio della Porta, was an Italian Renaissance painter of religious subjects. He spent all his career in Florence until his mid-forties, when he travelled to work in various cities, as far south as Rome. ''Assumption of the Virgin'' ( it, Assunzione di Maria) is a fresco by Rosso Fiorentino in the Chiostro dei Voti of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. Vasari's '' Lives of the Artists'' relates how it was painted rapidly between 1513 and 1514 ready to be inaugurated at the solemnity of 8 September 1514, when the basilica received the title of perpetual jubilee from Pope Leo X. Fiorentino came highly recommended to the monks by his master Andrea del Sarto (painter of most of the lunettes in the cloister). Madonna Of Bruges
The ''Madonna of Bruges'' is a marble sculpture by Michelangelo of the Virgin and Child. Michelangelo's depiction of the ''Madonna and Child'' differs significantly from earlier representations of the same subject, which tended to feature a pious Virgin smiling down on an infant held in her arms. Tondo Pitti
The ''Pitti Tondo'' ( Tondo Pitti) is a marble relief of the Virgin and Child by Michelangelo in round or tondo form. It was made between 1503 and 1504 and is now in the Museo nazionale del Bargello in Florence. History The tondo was made in the year in which Michelangelo sculpted his '' David'', having found the time to dedicate to some other paid private commissions. This work was made for Bartolomeo Pitti. His son Miniato, a monk at Monte Oliveto, donated it to Luigi Guicciardini (1487–1551).
