''Mad Cows and Englishmen'' is the sixth and last studio solo album by Captain Sensible, released in 1996 by Scratch Records. Critical reception In his review of the album on the music website ''Brainwashed'', Mark Weddle wrote: "Captain's psychedelic tinged power pop cranks up the guitar and carries on where the Damned left off in the early 80's around the time of ''Strawberries''." Weddle called the songs "well written and executed", stating "Of Sensible's half dozen or so solo albums to date, this one is his best". Reissues ''Mad Cows and Englishmen'' was reissued through Empty Records in 1997 and The Store For Music in 2001, adding live recordings of "Wot" and "Happy Talk" as bonus tracks. The hidden track, "Cigarette Sandy", was not included on the reissues. In 1998, Eagle Records reissued the album as ''The Masters'', including "Cigarette Sandy" and the two bonus tracks. Captain Sensible
Raymond Ian Burns (born 24 April 1954), known by the stage name Captain Sensible, is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. Captain Sensible co-founded the punk rock band the Damned, originally playing bass before switching to guitar. He embarked on a solo career during the 1980s, following a UK number one hit with his cover of "Happy Talk". Captain Sensible's distinctive appearance includes a red beret and sunglasses, typically with white frames. He was also a founder of the Blah! Party. Early life Captain Sensible was born in Balham, London, on 24 April 1954. He went to Stanley Technical School for Boys in South Norwood, Croydon. ''Strawberries'' is the fifth studio album by English punk rock band the Damned. It was released in October 1982 by record label Bronze. Background The record was released as the Damned were enjoying a higher public profile, thanks to the solo success of Captain Sensible. Sensible performed lead vocals on "Life Goes On" and "Don't Bother Me". He also introduced new instruments to the band, including sitar, and cello played by his then-girlfriend, Rachael Bor of the pop group Dolly Mixture. While ''Strawberries'' was generally praised for its positive, up-beat melodies, the album marked a time of conflict and division within the band. During the recording, bassist Paul Gray fought with drummer Rat Scabies over management and song-writing responsibilities. ''Grave Disorder'' is the ninth studio album from the punk rock band The Damned, released in August 2001. It was their first release since signing to Nitro Records and only studio album with Patricia Morrison. Style The album is musically similar to Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible's previous Damned collaboration, ''Strawberries''. It uses a combination of modern sampling and looping ("Absinthe"), gothic rock ("Thrill Kill"), punk rock ("Neverland", "Obscene" and "Amen"), deep gothic piano pieces ("Beauty of the Beast" and "The End of Time"), and more traditional pop songs. Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II (; July 12, 1895 – August 23, 1960) was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and (usually uncredited) director in the musical theater for almost 40 years. He won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Many of his songs are standard repertoire for vocalists and jazz musicians. He co-wrote 850 songs. Monty Oxymoron (born Laurence Burrow, 27 September 1961 in Cambridge, England) is a keyboardist for the English punk rock group the Damned. Biography His previous bands include Punk Floyd and Dr. Spacetoad Experience, with Captain Sensible. He released a few solo projects in the 1980s and 2000s. He joined the Damned in early 1996 and continues to tour and record with them. Monty also works as keyboardist and percussionist with the Sumerian Kyngs and as keyboardist with Tim Burness. He has spoken of love of psychedelic music, whose influence he claims to have heard in pre-Oxymoron Damned albums beginning with 1979's ''Machine Gun Etiquette''. The Damned are an English punk rock band formed in London in 1976 by lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist (and later guitarist) Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies. They were the first punk band from the United Kingdom to release a single, " New Rose" (1976), release a studio album, '' Damned Damned Damned'' (1977), and tour the United States. They have nine singles that charted on the UK Singles Chart Top 40. The band briefly broke up after '' Music for Pleasure'' (1977), the follow-up to their debut studio album, was critically dismissed. They quickly reformed without Brian James, and released '' Machine Gun Etiquette'' (1979). Addlestone ( or ) is a town in Surrey, England. It is located approximately southwest of London. The town is the administrative centre of the Borough of Runnymede, of which it is the largest settlement.
