Mabel Seagrave
Mabel Alexandria Seagrave (January 3, 1882 – November 10, 1935) was an American medical doctor who was sent to France by the National American Woman Suffrage Association to staff a refugee hospital during World War I. Dr. Seagrave stayed on after the end of the war to lead a Red Cross hospital as well as to perform operations at another hospital 40 miles away. France awarded Seagrave the silver Médaille d’honneur as a token of gratitude. Early life and education Seagrave was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory the daughter of Arthur Amasa Seagrave and Selina Stone Glass Seagrave. Selina Seagrave died at age 38 when Mabel was age 4. The next year, the family moved to Seattle, Washington Territory. While in Seattle, Mabel's father married a woman named Sarah Chatham. Cheyenne, Wyoming
Cheyenne ( or ) is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Wyoming, as well as the county seat of Laramie County, with 65,132 residents, per the 2020 US Census. It is the principal city of the Cheyenne metropolitan statistical area which encompasses all of Laramie County and had 100,512 residents as of the 2020 census. Local residents named the town for the Cheyenne Native American people in 1867 when it was founded in the Dakota Territory. Cheyenne is the northern terminus of the extensive Southern Rocky Mountain Front, which extends southward to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and includes the fast-growing Front Range Urban Corridor. A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). The plural ''women'' is sometimes used in certain phrases such as " women's rights" to denote female humans regardless of age. Typically, women inherit a pair of X chromosomes, one from each parent, and are capable of pregnancy and giving birth from puberty until menopause. More generally, sex differentiation of the female fetus is governed by the lack of a present, or functioning, SRY-gene on either one of the respective sex chromosomes. Female anatomy is distinguished from male anatomy by the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and vulva. American Women In World War I
World War I marked the first war in which American women were allowed to enlist in the armed forces. While thousands of women did join branches of the army in an official capacity, receiving veterans status and benefits after the war's close, the majority of female involvement was done through voluntary organizations of the war effort or through becoming a nurse for the military. Additionally, women made an impact on the war indirectly by filling the workforce, becoming employed in the jobs left behind by male soldiers. U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard More than 1,476 U.S. Navy nurses (American military nurses were all women then) served in military hospitals stateside and overseas. Over 400 U.S. military nurses died in service, almost all from the Spanish flu epidemic which swept through crowded military camps, hospitals, and ports of embarkation.
