MTV Live (American TV Program)
''MTV Live'' is an American television program that aired from 1997 to 1998 on MTV, featuring interviews with celebrity guests, live musical performances, news coverage, and music video premieres. 1997 series The program began its run in September 1997 in the then-newly acquired Times Square Studio on Broadway in New York. Toby Amies, Carson Daly and Ananda Lewis served as resident hosts to the daily hour-long live broadcast until its eventual merger with '' Total Request'' on September 14, 1998, forming what is now known as ''Total Request Live''. In a similar vein to its successor, the series featured celebrity interviews, music video premieres, musical performances, and reports from MTV News. One Astor Plaza, also known as 1515 Broadway and formerly the W. T. Grant Building, is a 54-story office building on Times Square in the Theater District, Manhattan, Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S. Designed by Der Scutt of Ely Jacques Kahn, Ely J. Toby Amies is a filmmaker and broadcaster who specialises in making programmes about art, music, and travel with an emphasis on fringe culture and alternative perspectives. He is best known for his feature-length documentary '' The Man Whose Mind Exploded'' and his broadcast work on BBC Radio 4, MTV Europes's ''Alternative Nation'', FilmFour, '' Lonely Planet Six Degrees'' and ''The Rough Guides''. Carson Daly
Carson Jones Daly (born June 22, 1973) is an American television host, radio personality, producer, and television personality. Sarasvati Ananda Lewis (March 21, 1973 – June 11, 2025) was an American broadcast journalist, human rights activist, and two-time NAACP Image Award recipient. Described asa bright star who was the voice of a generation, Lewis served as a cultural role model and staple television personality for BET and MTV during the late 1990s. She hosted BET's ''Teen Summit'' and served as a MTV VJ as well as hosting the network's show ''Hot Zone'' as well as occaisonally hosting ''Total Request Live''. She was the subject of the MTV documentary '' True Life: I Am Driving While Black''. Lewis hosted ''The Ananda Lewis Show'', a nationally syndicated American television talk show that ran for two seasons. ''Total Request'' is an American music video request show on MTV. Background The show debuted in April 1998 as part of a renewed effort by MTV to increase the amount of music programming aired on the network. The show originally debuted as a 30-minute program aired as part of a weeknight programming block that also included ''Artist's Cut'', '' Say What?'', and ''Rockumentary Remix''. Carson Daly served as the host. By May, the show had been expanded to an hour, replacing ''Rockumentary Remix''. Each episode consisted of counting down the day's top music video requests received by MTV via phone, email, and a camera set up in Times Square. While the show was based at MTV's studio in Times Square, it was also filmed in Seaside Heights, New Jersey as part of MTV's ''Summer Share'' from May through August 1998. ''Total Request Live'' (commonly abbreviated as ''TRL'') is an American television program that premiered on MTV on September 14, 1998. The early version of ''TRL'' featured popular music videos played during its countdown and was also used as a promotion tool by musicians, actors, and other celebrities to promote their newest works to target the show's Teen culture, teen demographic. During the original run of the program, ''TRL'' played the ten most requested music videos of the day, as voted on by viewers via phone or online. The show generally aired Monday through Thursday for one hour, though the scheduling and length of the show fluctuated over the years. Although ''TRL'' was billed as a live show, many episodes were prerecorded. MTV News
MTV News was the news production division of MTV. The service was available in the US with localized versions on MTV's global network and an online news team. In 2016, MTV refreshed the MTV News brand to compete with the likes of BuzzFeed and ''Vice'', but by mid-2017 MTV News was significantly downsized due to cutbacks.
