MONA Number
A MONA number (short for Moths of North America), or Hodges number after Ronald W. Hodges, is part of a numbering system for North American moths found north of Mexico in the Continental United States and Canada, as well as the island of Greenland. Introduced in 1983 by Hodges through the publication of ''Check List of the Lepidoptera of America North of Mexico'', the system began an ongoing numeration process in order to compile a list of the over 12,000 moths of North America north of Mexico. The system numbers moths within the same family close together for identification purposes. For example, the species '' Epimartyria auricrinella'' begins the numbering system at 0001 while '' Epimartyria pardella'' is numbered 0002. Epimartyria Auricrinella
''Epimartyria auricrinella'' (goldcap moss-eater moth) is a species of moth belonging to the family Micropterigidae. It was described by Lord Walsingham. It is known from the eastern parts of the United States (from Maine to Michigan and south to Tennessee and Georgia) as well as south-eastern Canada (from Nova Scotia to Ontario). Its MONA number is 0001. The species occurs in shaded locations, in wet swampy woods, boggy ditches, or creek sides where leafy (moss-like) liverworts grow. The length of the forewings is 4.2–5.6 mm. Adults are easily distinguished from those of the other members of the genus '' Epimartyria'' in possessing uniformly dark fuscous forewings without the yellowish spots present in those species. Adults are diurnal. They can be seen perched on low foliage during the day and can be active even in early morning after sunrise. Mating takes place in the afternoon. Numbering Scheme
There are many different numbering schemes for assigning nominal numbers to entities. These generally require an agreed set of rules, or a central coordinator. There are about 12,000 types of North American moths. In comparison, there are about 825 species of North American butterflies. The moths (mostly nocturnal) and butterflies (mostly diurnal) together make up the taxonomic order Lepidoptera. This list is sorted by MONA number (sometimes called a Hodges number), a numbering system for North American moths introduced by Ronald W. ''Epimartyria pardella'' is a species of moth belonging to the Micropterigidae family. It was described by Walsingham, Lord Thomas de Grey, in 1880. Its wingspan is 10–11 mm with a metallic brown forewing featuring three distinctive gold spots. Adults are on wing from early May to mid July and are day active. James Halliday McDunnough
James Halliday McDunnough (10 May 1877 – 23 February 1962) was a Canadians, Canadian Linguistics, linguist, musician, and Entomology, entomologist best known for his work with North American Lepidoptera, but who also made important contributions about North American Mayfly, Ephemeroptera. Early life McDunnough travelled with his mother and aunt to Berlin to be trained as a classical musician, studying under the great violinist Joseph Joachim. Moths Of North America
Moths are a group of insects that includes all members of the order Lepidoptera that are not butterflies. They were previously classified as suborder Heterocera, but the group is paraphyletic with respect to butterflies (suborder Rhopalocera) and neither subordinate taxon is used in modern classifications.
