''Mad TV'' (stylized as ''MADtv'') is an American sketch comedy television series created by David Salzman, Fax Bahr, and Adam Small. Loosely based on the humor magazine '' Mad'', ''Mad TVs pre-taped satirical sketches were primarily parodies of popular culture and occasionally politics. Many of its sketches featured the show's cast members playing recurring original characters and doing celebrity impressions. The series premiered on Fox on October 14, 1995, and ran for 14 seasons. Its final episode aired on May 16, 2009. Salzman created ''Mad TV'' with record producer Quincy Jones after they purchased the rights to ''Mad'' in 1995. Salzman brought on Bahr and Small, who had formerly written for the sketch comedy television series '' In Living Color'', as showrunners. The show was intended to compete with fellow sketch comedy series ''Saturday Night Live'' (''SNL''), which was experiencing declining viewership and poor critical reception. ''Mad'' (stylized in all caps) is an American humor magazine which was launched in 1952 and currently published by DC Comics, a unit of the DC Entertainment subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. ''Mad'' was founded by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines, launched as a comic book series before it became a magazine. Antonio Prohías
Antonio Prohías (January 17, 1921 – February 24, 1998) was a Cuban-American cartoonist. He was the creator of the satirical comic strip '' Spy vs. Spy'', which he illustrated for '' Mad'' magazine from 1961 to 1987. Biography In 1946, Prohías was given the Juan Gualberto Gómez award, recognizing him as the foremost cartoonist in Cuba. By the late 1940s, Prohías had begun working at ''El Mundo'', the most important newspaper in Cuba at the time. In January 1959, Prohías was the president of the Cuban Cartoonists Association; after Fidel Castro seized power, he personally honored the cartoonist for his anti-Batista political cartoons. But Prohías soon soured on Castro's actions of muzzling the press. When he drew cartoons to this effect, he was accused of working for the CIA by Fidel Castro's government. ''The Ben Stiller Show'' is an American sketch comedy series starring Ben Stiller that aired in two iterations, the first series airing six episodes on MTV in 1990, and the second series airing 12 episodes on Fox from September 27, 1992, to January 17, 1993, with a 13th episode airing in 1995 on Comedy Central. The Fox version also starred Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo and Bob Odenkirk. Character actor John F. O'Donohue also appeared in every episode. The program featured numerous filmed comedy segments, many of which parodied pop culture trends from the late '80s to early '90s. Despite receiving mostly positive reviews, Fox canceled the series after only 13 episodes, due to low ratings. Blaine Harold Capatch (born September 19, 1965) is an American stand-up comedian and writer. He is best known for hosting Season 2 of the Comedy Central game show '' Beat the Geeks''. Capatch was born in York, Pennsylvania, to Jean and Harold Capatch. He grew up in the small town of Dallastown, Pennsylvania, where his father owned and operated a barber shop. William Gaines
William Maxwell "Bill" Gaines (; March 1, 1922 – June 3, 1992) was an American publisher and co-editor of EC Comics. Following a shift in EC's direction in 1950, Gaines presided over what became an artistically influential and historically important line of mature-audience comics. He published the satirical magazine '' Mad'' for over 40 years. He was posthumously inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame (1993) and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame (1997).
