Calvin Smyre
Calvin Smyre (born May 17, 1947) is an American politician who recently served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for the 135th district. Elected in 1974, he was the longest-serving member of the Georgia Legislature. In May 2022, his nomination to serve as the United States ambassador to the Dominican Republic was withdrawn and he was instead nominated to serve as the United States ambassador to the Bahamas. Early life and education Smyre was born in Columbus, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Valley State University with a focus in business administration. Career Smyre has served as a delegate for Georgia to every Democratic National Convention since 1980, and became the first African American member elected from Georgia to the Democratic National Committee in 1984. Byromville is a town in Dooly County, Georgia, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census, up from 415 in 2000. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the Town of Byromville in 1905. The community was named after William H. Byrom, a pioneer citizen. Geography Byromville is located in northwestern Dooly County at (32.201496, -83.908028). Georgia State Route 90 passes through the center of town, leading southeast to Vienna, the county seat, and northwest to Montezuma.
