Lycksele
Lycksele (; ; Ume Sami language, Ume Sami: ) is a locality and the seat of Lycksele Municipality in Västerbotten County, province of Lapland (Sweden), Lapland, Sweden with 8,513 inhabitants in 2010. History Until the 1600s there were no settled communities in southern Lapland (Sweden), Lapland. The area was used as grazing land by the forest Sámi peoples, Sami but had no permanent population. As the Swedish government sought to strengthen its position, the need for permanent meeting places arose. Churches and marketplaces were established at these locations, where Sami, traders, and settlers could meet. Additionally, taxes were also collected there. This took place on a peninsula in the Ume River, upstream from the present city center, at Öhn (now known as Gammplatsen, which had previously served as a major winter settlement for the Sami in the area). Lycksele Municipality
Lycksele Municipality (; ; ) is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its administrative centre, seat is located in Lycksele and the municipality is located in the southern parts of Swedish Lapland (Sweden), Lapland. The municipality traces its history to Lycksele parish, which was in effect during the 19th century with very similar borders and size (5,000-5,500 km2). The whole rural municipality Lycksele became a market town (''köping'') in 1929 and stad (Sweden), city in 1946. In 1971 it was amalgamated with Örträsk Municipality. Generally the northern municipalities, already sparsely populated, have population decreases, but various supporting projects also exist. For instance, a campus of Umeå University is situated here. Sámi School (Sweden)
Sámi schools, which were referred to as ''Nomad schools'' or ''Lapp schools'' before 1977, are a type of school in Sweden that runs parallel to the standard primary school system. Sámi schools are part of the Swedish public school system, and as such are governed by the same curriculum that primary schools are. Sámi schools are state-owned educational institutions that are open to all children whose parents identify as Sámi. Each school has its own dormitory that many students live in for large parts of the academic year due to the long distances in the north of Sweden. Teaching takes place in both Swedish and Sámi, which is also taught separately. The Sámi schools have a small number of students. The schools are located in Karesuando, Lannavaara, Kiruna, Gällivare and Jokkmokk in Norrbotten County and in Tärnaby in Västerbotten County. Västerbotten County (), sometimes called Westrobothnia, is a county or '' län'' in the north of Sweden. Lapland (Sweden)
Lapland, also known by its Swedish name Lappland, is a province in northernmost Sweden. It borders the Swedish provinces of Jämtland, Ångermanland, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten, as well as Norway and Finland. Nearly a quarter of Sweden's land area is in Lapland. The historical province of Lapland originally extended further eastward. However, in 1809 the Russian Empire annexed the eastern part of Sweden and formed the Grand Duchy of Finland in that territory. Betsele IF
Betsele IF is a Swedish football club located in Lycksele in Västerbotten County. Background Founded in 1961 Betsele Idrottsförening provides football for women and girls. The club's football ground and clubhouse is located in the village of Ågläntan which is just over a mile from Lycksele. Andreas Wingerli (born September 11, 1997) is a Swedish professional ice hockey forward. He is currently playing with EV Zug of the National League (NL). David Rundblad (born 8 October 1990) is a Swedish professional ice hockey player who is currently playing with MoDo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Levi Borgstrom
Levi Petrus Borgstrom (7 November 1919 – 25 July 2001) was a Swedish-New Zealand carver. Early life Borgstrom was born in Lycksele, Sweden in 1919. As a teenager, he began using his father's tools to carve wooden cutlery and crockery and was strongly influenced by Saami and Norrland settler culture. His career was largely focused upon spoon carving. Career In 1951, he moved to New Zealand and began incorporating New Zealand resources into his Scandinavian-influenced works. He used New Zealand and introduced timbers in his works, including kōwhai, tānekaha, akeake, rewarewa, mānuka, macrocarpa, cherry wood, privet, mangrove, and silky oak. Borgstrom worked by drawing a design on a piece of wood and roughly creating the shape using a Scandinavian bow saw.
