Antsiferov Island
Antsiferov Island (russian: Остров Анциферова; also known as Shirinki russian: Ширинки Japanese 志林規島; Shirinki-tō) is an uninhabited volcanic island located in the northern Kuril Islands chain in the Sea of Okhotsk in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Its former Japanese name is derived from the Ainu language for "place of tall waves". Its nearest neighbor is Paramushir, located 15 km away across the Luzhin Strait. It is currently named for the cossack explorer Danila Antsiferov, who first described it along with other northern Kuril islands in the early eighteenth century. Geology Antsiferov is a roughly circular island with an area of 6 km2 and is part of a spur range extending to the west of the main Kuril islands arc. Eelpout
The eelpouts are the ray-finned fish family Zoarcidae. As the common name suggests, they are somewhat eel-like in appearance. All of the roughly 300 species are marine and mostly bottom-dwelling, some at great depths. Eelpouts are predominantly found in the Northern Hemisphere. The arctic, north pacific and north Atlantic oceans have the highest concentration of species, however species are found around the globe. They are conventionally placed in the " perciform" assemblage; in fact, the Zoarcoidei seem to be specialized members of the Gasterosteiformes- Scorpaeniformes group of Acanthopterygii. The largest member of the family is '' Zoarces americanus'', which may reach 1.1 m in length. Other notable genera include '' Lycodapus'' and '' Gymnelus''. Straits Of The Kuril Islands
A strait is an oceanic landform connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. The surface water generally flows at the same elevation on both sides and through the strait in either direction. Most commonly, it is a narrow ocean channel that lies between two land masses. Some straits are not navigable, for example because they are either too narrow or too shallow, or because of an unnavigable reef or archipelago. Straits are also known to be loci for sediment accumulation. Usually, sand-size deposits occur on both the two opposite strait exits, forming subaqueous fans or deltas.
