Luk'Luk'I
''Luk'Luk'I'' (pronounced "lucklucky") is a Canadian drama film, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The feature directorial debut of Wayne Wapeemukwa, the film is an expansion of his earlier short film ''Luk'Luk'I: Mother'', which premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Set in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics, the film centres on five residents of the poverty-stricken neighbourhood. The cast includes Angel Gates, Joe Buffalo, Ken Harrower, Eric Buurman and Angela Dawson. The actors participated directly in writing the screenplay, using their own real-life experiences – including Harrower's experience as a gay man with a disability and Dawson's experience as local underground culture figure "Rollergirl" – to inform and create their characters' storylines. Wayne Wapeemukwa
Wayne Wapeemukwa is a Canadian film director and screenwriter of Métis descent from Vancouver, British Columbia. He is most noted for his feature film debut ''Luk'Luk'I'' (2017), which won the Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and the Directors Guild of Canada's Discovery Award. Education and filmmaking Wapeemukwa participated in his high-school film program and has been influenced and inspired, since childhood, by Chelsea McMullan. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor's degree and is pursuing a Master's degree in Philosophy and psychoanalysis at the New School for Social Research. Wapemukwa also works as a public-school teacher and research assistant. Angel Gates is Wapeemukwa's muse, having first consulted on research for his short films and later starring, and being featured, in four of his documentary films. 2017 Toronto International Film Festival
The 42nd annual Toronto International Film Festival was held from September 7 to 17, 2017. There were fourteen programs, with the Vanguard and City to City programs both being retired from previous years, with the total number of films down by 20% from the 2016 edition. The 39th annual Toronto International Film Festival, the 39th event in the Toronto International Film Festival series, was held in Canada from 4–14 September 2014. The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a list of neighbourhoods in Vancouver, neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
