João Luiz de Avellar, better known simply as Luiz Avellar (born April 7, 1956 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian piano player. He played with many of the best musicians of Brazil, including Nico Assumpção, Kiko Freitas and Ney Conceição. Nico Assumpção
Nico Assumpção (Antônio Álvaro Assumpção Neto) (August 13, 1954 – January 20, 2001), was a Brazilian bass player. Biography He was born Antônio Álvaro Assumpção Neto in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1954. His father was a professional bass player, but Nico debuted in music by playing the acoustic guitar at the age of 10, having classes with Paulinho Nogueira. He changed to bass at 16, to fill in the void in a schoolmate's band. At age of 16, he went to the U.S. to study harmony and orchestration at the University of California. Back in Brazil he went to study at CLAM, with famous Brazilian bassists Luis Chaves and Amilton Godoy. Later, in 1976, he again left Brazil and headed to New York City, willing to study and perform with his instrument at a deeper level. Ney Conceição
The ney ( ; ) is an end-blown flute that figures prominently in traditional Persian, Turkish, Jewish, Arab, and Egyptian music. In some of these musical traditions, it is the only wind instrument used. The ney has been played for over 4,500 years, dating back to ancient Egypt, making it one of the oldest musical instruments still in use. The ney consists of a piece of hollow cane or giant reed with five or six finger holes and one thumb hole. The Arabic ney is played without any mouthpiece. This contrasts with the Turkish ney that sometimes have a brass, horn, or plastic mouthpiece which is placed at the top to protect the wood, to produce a steeper sound, and protect it from damage, with a better edge to blow on. Modern neys may instead be made of metal or plastic tubing. The pitch of the ney varies depending on the region and the finger arrangement.
