Ludwig Becker (explorer)
Ludwig Phillip Heinrich Becker (5 or 9 September 1808 – 27 April 1861) was a German artist, explorer and naturalist. He was born in Rödelheim near Frankfurt am Main. He moved to Australia in 1850, and was a member of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition. He died at the expedition's camp on the western bank of Koorliatto Waterhole, Bulloo River in 1861. Early years Becker was born at Rödelheim near Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1808. His father was Ernst Friedrich Becker (1750–1826) and his mother was Amöne Eleonore Weber (1782–1819). Becker was the eldest of five children from this marriage. After his mother's death, Becker's father married Johanette Christiane Weber, a younger sister of his first wife. They had three more children. He left Germany in 1850. As was common practice at the time, he was referred to as Dr. Becker, but had not studied at a university. Ludwig Hugo Becker (July 19, 1833 in Wesel - December 25, 1868 in Düsseldorf) was a painter and etcher. Becker was born at Wesel and studied landscape painting under Schirmer and Gude, at Düsseldorf, about 1852. He afterwards visited Westphalia, the Upper Rhine, the Moselle, Switzerland, Normandy, and the neighbourhood of the Baltic. In 1861 he was awarded a medal at Metz. He died at Düsseldorf in 1868. Life Becker was born the son of the eponymous Cologne master craftsman and master builder. He studied from 1873 at the Technical University of Aachen and was trained in addition to the stonemason and sculptor at the Cologne Dombauhütte. In Mainz he was named church master builder (''Kirchenbaumeister'') in 1884, and cathedral master builder (''Dombaumeister'') from 1909 to 1940. After 1909 he partnered with Anton Falkowski, and later with his son, the church architect Hugo Becker (1897–1967). Becker also worked as a construction researcher at the Mainz Cathedral, who brought important findings to light; however, his conclusions were flawed. Ludwig Wilhelm Emil Ernst Becker FRSE (1860 – 1947) was Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Glasgow from 1893 until 1935 when he retired. Life Born in Wesel, Kingdom of Prussia, Becker was educated at the University of Bonn. After two years as an assistant in the Berlin Observatory, the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres appointed him in 1885 to take charge of his large private observatory at Dunecht, near Aberdeen. When that institution was wound up in the autumn of 1888, the instruments were passed on to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury for a new Royal Observatory. A site on Blackford Hill in Edinburgh was selected in 1889 and Becker was included on the staff. He was appointed to the Glasgow Chair of Astronomy four years later. Ludwig Becker (25 October 1892 – 4 April 1974) was a German politician, member of the Communist Party of Germany, and trades unionist who participated in illegal political opposition during the Nazi years. Life In the labour movement Ludwig Becker was born and grew up in Schwäbisch Gmünd, a midsized town in the hills to the east of Stuttgart. His father was a socialist and a Goldsmith, the trade in which he, too, was apprenticed. His apprenticeship completed, he undertook a "Journeyman year" travelling the country while working at his chosen trade in order to gain hands-on experience from a variety of more experienced practitioners.
