Lucy (spacecraft)
''Lucy'' is a NASA space probe on a twelve-year journey to eight different asteroids. It is slated to visit two Asteroid belt, main belt asteroids as well as six Jupiter trojans – asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun, orbiting either ahead of or behind the planet. All target encounters will be Flyby (spaceflight), flyby encounters. The ''Lucy'' spacecraft is the centerpiece of a US$981 million mission. On 4 January 2017, ''Lucy'' was chosen, along with the Psyche (spacecraft), ''Psyche'' mission, as NASA's Discovery Program missions 13 and 14 respectively. It was launched on 16 October 2021. In November 2023 and in April 2025 it flew by and photographed asteroids 152830 Dinkinesh, Dinkinesh and Donaldjohanson, respectively. Lucy will reach its first main target, the Jupiter Trojan asteroid 3548_Eurybates, Eurybates, in August 2027. 617 Patroclus ( ) is a large binary Jupiter trojan asteroid. It is a dark D-type asteroid and a List of slow rotators (minor planets), slow rotator, due to the 103-hour orbital period of its two components. It is one of five Jupiter trojan asteroids targeted by the ''Lucy (spacecraft), Lucy'' space probe, and is scheduled for a flyby (spaceflight), flyby in 2033. The asteroid belt is a torus-shaped region in the Solar System, centered on the Sun and roughly spanning the space between the orbits of the planets Jupiter and Mars. 52246 Donaldjohanson ( provisional designation ) is a carbonaceous asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately long and at its widest point. It was discovered on 2 March 1981, by American astronomer Schelte Bus at the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. The C-type asteroid was the 2nd target of the ''Lucy'' mission, with the spacecraft flying 960 km (600 mi) from the surface on 20 April 2025, revealing the asteroid to be a contact binary. It was named after American paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson, the discoverer of the "Lucy" hominid fossil. A gravity assist, gravity assist maneuver, swing-by, or generally a gravitational slingshot in orbital mechanics, is a type of spaceflight flyby (spaceflight), flyby which makes use of the relative movement (e.g. orbit around the Sun) and gravity of a planet or other astronomical object to alter the Course (navigation), path and speed of a spacecraft, typically to save propellant and reduce expense. Gravity assistance can be used to accelerate a spacecraft, that is, to increase or decrease its speed or redirect its path. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 album ''Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band''. It was written primarily by John Lennon with assistance from Paul McCartney, and credited to the Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership. Lennon's son Julian inspired the song with a nursery school drawing that he called "Lucy – in the sky with diamonds". AL 288-1, commonly known as Lucy or Dinkinesh (), is a collection of several hundred pieces of fossilized bone comprising 40 percent of the skeleton of a female of the hominin species ''Australopithecus afarensis''. 3548 Eurybates ( ) is a carbonaceous Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp and the parent body of the Eurybates family, approximately in diameter. It is a target to be visited by the Lucy (spacecraft), ''Lucy'' mission in August 2027. Discovered during the second Palomar–Leiden Trojan survey in 1973, it was later named after Eurybates from Greek mythology. This C-type asteroid is among the #Largest Jupiter trojans, 60 largest known Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 8.7 hours.
