Lucas Dillon (judge)
Sir Lucas Dillon (died 1593), also called Luke, was a leading Irish barrister and judge of the Elizabethan era who held the offices of Attorney General for Ireland and Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. He supported the Lord Deputy Henry Sidney in the cess controversy and the Lord Deputy John Perrot in the Desmond Rebellions. He was held in high regard by Queen Elizabeth, but was accused by his enemies of corruption and maladministration. Birth and origins Lucas was born in 1529 or 1530, the eldest son of Sir Robert Dillon and his wife Genet (also called Elizabeth) Barnewall. His father, called of Newtown, pursued a judicial career and would in 1558 become Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas. His father's family was Old English and descended from Sir Henry Dillon who had come to Ireland with Prince John in 1185 during the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. Lucas Dillon, 6th Viscount Dillon (died 1682) was an Irish peer who obtained favours from King Charles II. Birth and origins Lucas was born in Ireland as the eldest son of Theobald Dillon and his wife Sarah Bourke. His father was the third son of Christopher Dillon, who was the eldest son and heir apparent of Theobald Dillon, 1st Viscount Dillon. The Dillons are an Old English family, established in 1185 when Sir Henry Dillon came to Ireland with Prince John. Lucas's mother was an illegitimate daughter of David Bourke, who was a younger son of Theobald Bourke, 1st Viscount Mayo. Her family, the Mayo Bourkes were Gaelicised Old English. Sir Lucas Dillon of Loughglynn (1579–1656) was in 1628 one of the negotiators of the Graces (Ireland), the Graces; he was MP for County Roscommon (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Roscommon in the two Irish Parliaments of Charles I of England, Charles I. At the Irish Rebellion of 1641 he sided with the rebels and joined the Irish Catholic Confederation, where he served on the Supreme Council. Birth and origins Lucas was born in 1579, the second son of Theobald Dillon, 1st Viscount Dillon, Theobald Dillon and Eleanor Tuite. His father would become the first Viscount Dillon in 1622.
