Lou Engledow
Louis William Bircham "Lou" Engledow is a retired senior Australian Public Servant, best known for his time as Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs between August 1977 and July 1980, and for his contribution to the development of Canberra in various official roles. Life and career Between 1973 and 1977, Engledow was Secretary of the Department of the Capital Territory. Before being appointed to the role, he was City Manager in the Department of the Interior, and had also worked in the National Capital Development Commission. As City Manager, he was responsible for daily administrative activities for Canberra and the ACT, including Jervis Bay; these activities included street collections, rates, building plans, consumer protection, bus services and welfare. In August 1977, Engledow was appointed permanent head of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. His appointment lasted until July 1980, when he retired from the public service. George Warwick Smith
George Henry Warwick Smith (3 October 1916 – 27 December 1999) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life Warwick Smith was born in Charters Towers, Queensland on 3 November 1916. He attended high school at Brisbane Grammar School, but left early at the age of 15. He went on to matriculate and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. Career Warwick Smith moved from a job at the Queensland Education Department to the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Commerce. He soon left the public service to join the Army, serving during the Second World War between 1941 and 1945. Laurie Daniels
Lawrence John Daniels (11 August 1916 – 16 September 1994) was a senior Australian public servant and policymaker. Life and career Laurie Daniels was born in Adelaide on 11 August 1916. He left school, for Sydney, at the age of 17 and won an Australian Public Service job at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Daniels moved to Canberra in 1946 with the ATO. In 1973, Daniels was appointed Secretary of the Department of Social Security, where he stayed until 1977. In 1977 he became Secretary of the Department of the Capital Territory, serving a five-year term. At the end of his Department of Capital Territory appointment, Daniels retired, having served 47 years in the public service. Daniels died of cancer on 16 September 1994. Lloyd Forrester Bott (8 April 1917 – 8 September 2004) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life Lloyd Bott was born on 8 April 1917 in Thornbury, Melbourne. He attended Northcote High School. Career After leaving high school, Bott qualified for the Commonwealth Public Service in 1933 and went to work in the Post Office in Sydney. He returned to Melbourne a year later and began to study at the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Commerce, which he completed in 1948 when he returned from the Second World War, having served in the Australian Navy. John Menadue
John Laurence Menadue (born 8 February 1935) is an Australian businessman and public commentator, and formerly a senior public servant and diplomat. He served as Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet from 1975 to 1976, working under the Whitlam and Fraser governments. He was later appointed by Malcolm Fraser as Australian Ambassador to Japan, in which position he served from 1977 to 1980. After which Menadue returned to Australia and was appointed the Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs from 1980 to 1983.
