Grinspoon are an Australian rock band from Lismore, New South Wales, which formed in 1995 by Pat Davern on guitar, Joe Hansen on bass guitar, Kristian Hopes on drums and frontman Phil Jamieson on vocals and guitar. Also in that year, Grinspoon won the national youth radio, Triple J–sponsored Triple J Unearthed#Talent competition (1995–2005), Unearthed competition for Lismore, with their post-grunge song "Grinspoon (EP), Sickfest". The band's name references Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, who supported marijuana for medical use. Triple J Hottest 100, 2002
The 2002 Triple J Hottest 100, announced on 26 January 2003, was the tenth of such countdowns of the most popular songs of the year, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J. As in previous years, a CD featuring 39 (not necessarily the top 39) songs was released. For the first time, a DVD, containing film clips of songs from the Hottest 100 was also released. This was also the last time that phone voting was allowed; in the 2003 poll, only internet voting was permitted. Violent And Lazy
"Violent and Lazy" is the fourth single by Grinspoon from their second studio album '' Easy''. It was released on 13 November 2000 on the Grudge label (the Australian imprint of Universal Records), which peaked at No. 15 on the ARIA Alternative Singles Chart. Grinspoon guitarist Pat Davern describes the song as being "probably the least heavy song on ''Easy''. We thought we’d release three really rock singles off the record first. This one’s maybe a bit more positive than the other, dirtier songs." The band's drummer, Kristian Hopes, however describes it as being one "of the heavier songs on the album". Triple J
Triple J is an Australian government-funded national radio station founded in 1975 as a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). It aims to appeal to young listeners of alternative music, and plays far more Australian content than commercial networks. The station was set up under the Gough Whitlam government, wanting to extend the appeal of the ABC to young Australians. Initially broadcasting as 2JJ or Double Jay from 19 January 1975, it stood apart from commercial stations with its lack of private advertising and its fringe music programming. ''New Detention'' is the third studio album by Australian alternative rock band Grinspoon. It was released in 2002 by record label Grudge, which peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart. By December that year it was certified platinum for shipment of 70,000 units. Content The ballad " Chemical Heart" marked a change in focus for the band towards a more mature, mainstream sound. This change would become more apparent on their next album, '' Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills'' (2004), however, ''New Detention'' did contain songs in the classic Grinspoon style to appeal to fans of their previous work, such as the songs "Boltcutter" and "Killswitch".
