Loscoat
{{No footnotes, date=February 2025 Geography Loscoat was, before 1945, a hamlet belonging to the village o which is now a large suburb of Brest. Part of the former hamlet has now becoman industrial area(fr) whereas the rest has become a residential area. World War II As in all other hamlets around Brest, intense fighting between the American infantry forces and the German Wehrmacht took place in Loscoat during the Battle for Brest. Most notably, Private First Class Ernest Prussman, from the 13th Infantry Regiment, took over his squad on 8 September 1944 during the advance on "Les Coates" '' rong transliteration of Loscoat' in Brittany, and disarmed several Germans, including a machine gun crew. Shot by a German rifleman, his dying act was to unleash a hand grenade that killed the man who shot him. Ernest Prussman
Ernest W. Prussman (September 15, 1921 – September 8, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in World War II. Biography He was born in 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland to Herbert Werner Prussman. Prussman joined the Army from Brighton, Massachusetts in October 1942 and by September 8, 1944, was serving as a private first class in the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division. On that day, near Loscoat (now an industrial district of Brest) in Brittany, France, Prussman advanced ahead of his unit and single-handedly captured several enemy soldiers and destroyed a machine gun nest before being killed. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor seven months later, on April 17, 1945. Prussman was buried at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in Saint-James, Normandy, France. The ''Wehrmacht'' (, ) were the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945. The Battle for Brest was fought in August and September 1944 on the Western Front (World War II), Western Front during World War II.
