The City of Los Angeles park and playground departments, also referred to as commissions or committees, were the two municipal government agencies which managed parks and recreational facilities in Los Angeles, California, before the current Department of Recreation and Parks was chartered in 1947. The Park Department was founded with the first Los Angeles city charter in 1889. The Playground Department was founded in 1904 and was renamed the Department of Playground and Recreation in the 1925 charter. History The Los Angeles Department of Parks was organized in 1889. P-22
P-22 ( – December 17, 2022) was a wild mountain lion who resided in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California, on the eastern side of the Santa Monica Mountains. P-22 was first identified in 2012 and was the subject of significant media attention, including numerous books, television programs and other works of art. P-22 was often recorded prowling in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was monitored by a radio collar. P-22 remained in Griffith Park for ten years until he was captured on December 12, 2022. He was then euthanized on December 17, 2022, after examinations revealed he was suffering from traumatic injuries consistent with being hit by a car, in combination with several longer-term health issues. Casa de Castelar (later, The College Settlement) was an American settlement in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in February 1894, during the settlement movement era, by a local branch of the College Settlements Association called the Los Angeles Settlement Association (LASA). Casa de Castelar was the first settlement house in the city, and the first settlement house west of the Mississippi River. Governance According to the Association's constitution, "The objects of this Association shall be: (1) To establish and maintain resident settlements in Los Angeles. (2) To study and develop the social conditions of the settlement districts. (3) To help the privileged and the unprivileged to a better understanding of their mutual obligations. The Selig Zoo in Los Angeles, California was an early 20th century animal collection managed by Col. W.N. Selig for use in Selig Polyscope Company films and as a tourist attraction. Over the years the zoo was also known as the Luna Park Zoo, California Zoological Gardens, Zoopark, and, eventually, Lincoln Amusement Park. Griffith Park Zoo, referred to today as the Old Los Angeles Zoo, is a city-owned former zoo now in ruins, located in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. The zoo opened in 1912, closed in 1966 with the opening of the Los Angeles Zoo, and now features animal enclosure ruins, picnic areas, and multiple hiking trails. The Mesmer family of California was a wealthy family of early Los Angeles settlers who contributed to the development of the city between the rancho era and the explosive growth of the post-WWII era. Louis Mesmer Louis Aloise Moessmer Mesmer (February 20, 1829 – August 18, 1900) was, in his day, “considered in the front rank of the leaders of the city.” Originally from Alsace, a region of eastern France with strong German cultural influence, Mesmer was trained as a bread baker. He initially worked in Ohio and then along the Fraser River in British Columbia, where he tried his hand at mining and then baked for the Hudson Bay Company. Mesmer immigrated to California in 1859, when the population of Los Angeles was fewer than 3,500 people. He had $20,000 in savings and used it to buy a bakery on Main Street, which he ran for two years. Griffith Park
Griffith Park is a large municipal park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park includes popular attractions such as the Los Angeles Zoo, the Autry Museum of the American West, the Griffith Observatory, and the Hollywood Sign. Due to its appearance in many films, the park is among the most famous municipal parks in North America. A petroleum reservoir or oil and gas reservoir is a subsurface accumulation of hydrocarbons contained in porous or fractured rock formations. Such reservoirs form when kerogen (ancient plant matter) is created in surrounding rock by the presence of high heat and pressure in the Earth's crust.
