Lord-Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a notable person in the county, and despite the name, may be either male or female, peer or not. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. Clare Amabel Margaret FitzRoy, Countess of Euston (née Kerr; born 15 April 1951) is the current Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. She is also President of the Suffolk Agricultural Association with a particular interest in local breeds the Suffolk Punch horse and the Red Poll cow. Timothy John Edward Tollemache, 5th Baron Tollemache (born 13 December 1939) is an English peer and landowner. He is the current owner of Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, the principal seat of the Tollemache family. Early life and education Tollemache was born in Norwich, the eldest son of Major John Edward Hamilton Tollemache, 4th Baron Tollemache of the Coldstream Guards (1910–1975), and his wife, Dinah Jamieson, daughter of Sir Archibald Jamieson. John Julian Ganzoni, 2nd Baron Belstead, Baron Ganzoni, (30 September 1932 – 3 December 2005) was a British Conservative politician and peerage, peer who served as Leader of the House of Lords under Margaret Thatcher from 1988 to 1990. Sir Joshua Rowley, 7th Baronet
Joshua Francis Rowley, M.A., JP, DCL (31 December 1920 – 21 February 1997), was a soldier and landowner, and Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk from 1978 to 1994. Personal life He was the son of Colonel Sir Charles Rowley, 6th Baronet. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in the Grenadier Guards from 1940 to 1946. In 1959 he married The Hon. Celia Ella Vere Monckton (1925-1997), 2nd daughter of the 8th Viscount Galway: they had one daughter, Susan Emily (who married the art expert Robert Holden ) and two grandchildren. Lady Rowley served as a magistrate and a lady in waiting to Princess Alexandra. On 19 January 1962 he inherited the baronetcy from his father. Colonel Sir Thomas Courtenay Theydon Warner, 1st Baronet (19 July 1857 – 15 December 1934) was a British politician, who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Somerset from 1892 to 1895, and for Lichfield from 1896 to 1923. Warner was an officer in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, where he became major on 13 January 1902. He received the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel on 2 August 1902, and later served as lieutenant-colonel in command and honorary colonel of the battalion. Frederick William John Hervey, 3rd Marquess of Bristol (28 June 1834 – 7 August 1907) was a British peer and member of parliament (MP). Hervey was born in 1834 at Bristol House, Putney Heath, the son of Frederick Hervey, Lord Jermyn (later the 2nd Marquess of Bristol). He was educated at Eton and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1856. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the West Suffolk Militia (commanded by his father) on 14 December 1854.
