Loos () is a Communes of France, commune in the Nord (French department), Nord Departments of France, department in northern France (Hauts-de-France). It is located in the Métropole Européenne de Lille, European Metropolis of Lille, and is a suburb of the city of Lille, bordering it on its southwest side. In 2018, Loos had a population of 22,426. The commune has a land area of . The town hall of Loos, with its large belfry, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 in recognition of its historical importance to municipal power in Europe. Loos-en-Gohelle
Loos-en-Gohelle (, ) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography It is a former coal mining town, three miles northwest of the centre of Lens. The two largest (184 m & 182 m) spoil heaps in Europe are in Loos-en-Gohelle, those of pits 11 and 19, and are visible for miles around. They are part of the mines of the Nord-Pas de Calais region that have become the 38th French site on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as "a living and changing landscape". Loos Memorial
The Loos Memorial is a World War I memorial forming the sides and rear of Dud Corner Cemetery, located near the commune of Loos-en-Gohelle, in the Pas-de-Calais département of France. The memorial lists 20,610 names of British and Commonwealth soldiers with no known grave who were killed in the area during and after the Battle of Loos, which started on 25 September 1915. This memorial covers the same sector of the front as the Le Touret Memorial, with each memorial commemorating the dead either side of the date of the start of the Battle of Loos. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the sculptures were by Sir Charles Wheeler. The memorial was unveiled on 4 August 1930 by General Sir Nevil Macready. Macready served as Adjutant-General of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from the outbreak of the war to February 1916, and then served as Adjutant-General to the Forces until a few months before the end of the war in November 1918. Loos, British Columbia
Loos is a locality on the Canadian National Railway west of McBride, British Columbia, immediately next to Crescent Spur and the confluence of the Morkill River with the Fraser River. Loos Post Office opened 30 March 1916, named in recognition of the Battle of Loos of World War I. The first postmaster was Mrs. A Martin. The post office closed 11 July 1951, after most of the residents had moved to Crescent Spur. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway station here was renamed from "Crescent Island" to Loos later in 1916. The community experienced flooding in 1936. Via Rail's Jasper – Prince Rupert train calls at the Loos railway station. The original settlers were Ole Olson Leboe, originally of Vagland, Norway, and his wife Anna Maria. Battle Of Loos
The Battle of Loos took place from 1915 in France on the Western Front (World War I), Western Front, during the First World War. It was the biggest British attack of 1915, the first time that the British used Chemical weapons in World War I, gas as a weapon and the first mass engagement of Kitchener's Army, New Army divisions. The French and British tried to break through the German defences in County of Artois, Artois in the north and Champagne (historical province), Champagne at the south end of the Noyon Salient to restore a war of movement. Despite improved methods, more ammunition, better equipment and gas, the Franco–British attacks were contained by the Germans, except for local losses of ground. Van Gend & Loos was a Dutch distribution company. It was established in 1809, and was purchased by DHL in 2003. History Van Gend & Loos was established by the Antwerp-based innkeeper and carriage driver Jan-Baptist van Gend. He had married a woman from the Loos family in 1796. When Van Gend's brother-in-law Petrus Josephus Loos died in 1809, his diligence company was merged with Van Gend's company to form Van Gend & Loos. The ''De Algemeene Postwagen Onderneming J.B. van Gend & Loos'' (General Postal Carriage Company J.B. van Gend & Loos) gradually expanded its network of diligence services, to transport passengers, goods and money. The company remained active in the Low Countries (and beyond) when Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830.
