''Liturgy'' is a ballet made by New York City Ballet resident choreographer Christopher Wheeldon to ''Fratres'' by Arvo Pärt. The premiere took place on May 31, 2003 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, originated by Jock Soto and Wendy Whelan. Whelan described the piece as "a piece about union". Christopher Wheeldon
Christopher Peter Wheeldon OBE (born 22 March 1973) is an English international choreographer of contemporary ballet. Life and career Born in Yeovil, Somerset, to an engineer and a physical therapist, Wheeldon began training to be a ballet dancer at the age of 8. He attended the Royal Ballet School between the ages of 11 and 18. In 1991, Wheeldon joined the Royal Ballet, London; and in that same year, he won the gold medal at the Prix de Lausanne competition. Arvo Pärt
Arvo Pärt (; born 11 September 1935) is an Estonian composer of contemporary classical music. Since the late 1970s, Pärt has worked in a minimalist style that employs tintinnabuli, a compositional technique he invented. Pärt's music is in part inspired by Gregorian chant. New York State Theater
The David H. Koch Theater is a theater for ballet, modern and other forms of dance, part of the Lincoln Center, at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and 63rd Street in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Career Jock Soto danced featured roles in over 40 ballets, of which more than 35 were created for him. While a student at the School of American Ballet (SAB) he danced the role of Luke in Peter Martins' ''The Magic Flute'', which was choreographed for SAB's 1981 workshop performances. It transferred to the New York City Ballet, and he retained his role. He joined New York City Ballet in 1981 and made his debut as Luke in ''The Magic Flute'' the following January. Wendy Whelan
Wendy Whelan (; born May 7, 1967) is an American ballet dancer. She was principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and performed with the company for 30 years, and toured in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Whelan has also been an influential guest artist with Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. In 2019, Whelan was named Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet. Early life Whelan was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, She started ballet at age three. Contemporary ballet is a genre of dance that incorporates elements of classical ballet and modern dance. Maria Kowroski
Maria Kowroski is an American ballet dancer. She is a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet. Early life Kowroski was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She started ballet at the age of five. In 1992, she entered the School of American Ballet in New York City. Career In 1994, at the age of 17, Kowroski entered the New York City Ballet as an apprentice, and became a member of the corps de ballet a year later. She was promoted to soloist in 1997 and principal dancer in 1999.
