Literary And Debating Society (NUI, Galway)
The Literary & Debating Society is a student society at the University of Galway. It was founded as the ''Literary and Scientific Society'' in 1846, and incorporated into the then Queen's College, Galway, in 1852. It has as its objective "the promotion of oratory among the students of the University, and the faculty of clear thinking and sound reasoning upon matters which may be deemed to be of vital importance". UCC Philosophical Society
The UCC Philosophical Society, also known as the 'Philosoph', is the largest debating society at University College Cork, Ireland. The Philosoph was founded in 1850, making it the oldest society at UCC. The society carries out a number of functions, including weekly debates with guest speakers, participating in debating competitions, running workshops for the students of UCC to develop their public speaking skills and running debating competitions and workshops for schoolchildren (including the Denny Schools Debating Competition). In the 1960s, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Seán MacBride described the Philosoph as "the centre of independent thought in Ireland". John Monroe (lawyer)
John Monroe PC, QC (1839 – September 1899), was an Irish lawyer and judge. Background and education Monroe was born at Moira, County Down, eldest son of John Monroe senior and Jane Harvey. He was educated at Queens College Galway, where he was auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for two years, from 1860 to 1862, and at the King's Inns, where he was auditor of the Law Students' Debating Society of Ireland for the 1862–1863 session. Legal career Monroe was called to the Irish Bar in 1863; he took silk in 1877 and became a Bencher of the King's Inns in 1884. For a short period (1879 to 1880) he was Law Adviser to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was appointed Solicitor-General for Ireland in June 1885 but relinquished the post in November upon his appointment to a judgeship of the Landed Estates Court. John Atkinson, Baron Atkinson, (13 December 1844 – 13 March 1932) was an Irish politician and judge. He was a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1905 to 1928. Early life and career Atkinson was born at Drogheda, County Louth, the eldest son of Edward Atkinson, a physician, of Glenwilliam Castle, County Limerick and Skea House, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, and his wife Rosetta. He was educated at the Belfast Academy and later at Queen's College Galway, which he attended from 1858 to 1865. Frank Hugh O'Donnell
Frank Hugh O'Donnell (also Frank Hugh O'Cahan O'Donnell), born Francis Hugh MacDonald (9 October 1846 – 2 November 1916) was an Irish writer, journalist and Irish nationalism, nationalist politician. Early life O'Donnell was born in an army barracks in Devon, England, where his father, Sergeant Bernard MacDonald, was stationed. His mother, Mary Kain, was a native of Ballybane, close to Galway city in Ireland. He was educated at the Erasmus Smith School in Galway, Coláiste Iognáid (the "Jes"), and later enrolled in University of Galway, Queen's College Galway, where he studied English literature, history and political economy. Michael Francis Ward
Michael Francis Ward (1845 – 17 June 1881) was an Irish doctor, surgeon, politician and nationalist MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and as member of the Home Rule League represented Galway Borough from 1874 until 1880. Ward was born in Galway in 1845, the son of Timothy Ward, a city merchant, and his wife Catherine (''née'' Lynch). He was educated at Summerhill College at Athlone, and at Queen's College Galway which he entered in 1861 to study medicine. He was elected auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1866-1867 session. Ward left Galway to continue his medical studies at Dr Steevens' Hospital in Dublin, under the auspices of the Catholic University. John Gordon PC (Ire) (23 November 1849– 26 September 1922) was an Irish lawyer and politician, who served as Attorney-General for Ireland and a Judge of the High Court. Life and career Gordon was the son of Samuel Gordon, of Shankhill, County Down, and Arabella Barclay. He was educated at Queen's College Galway, a constituent college of the Queen's University of Ireland, where he held a senior scholarship in mathematics, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in that subject (3rd class honours) in 1873, and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1876. He served as auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1873-1874 session. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law (LLD) on the dissolution of the Queen's University in 1882. Sir John Guy Rutledge, KC (18 March 1872 – 15 February 1930 in Rangoon, Burma) was a British barrister and colonial judge and official in Lower Burma. Early life and career in England Born in Aughnahoo, County Tyrone, Rutledge was educated at Queens College Galway, where he served as auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1893-1894 session. He was awarded the BA degree of the Royal University of Ireland in 1893, and took his MA in 1894. He remained at QCG to study law, gaining scholarships in law for 1894-1895 and 1895-1896, and a senior exhibition in law for 1896-1897. Rutledge continued his studies in London, and was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1897. Patrick Lenihan
Patrick James Lenihan (4 September 1902 – 11 March 1970) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Longford–Westmeath constituency from 1965 to 1970. He held the distinction of being the only parent to be elected to the Oireachtas when his child was already a member.
