Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games or Paralympics is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of disability, disabilities. There are Winter Paralympic Games, Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, have been held shortly after the corresponding Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympics began as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in Stoke Mandeville Games, 1948. The 1960 Summer Paralympics, 1960 Games in Rome drew 400 athletes with disabilities from 23 countries, as proposed by doctor Antonio Maglio. Currently it is one of the largest international sporting events: the 2020 Summer Paralympics featuring 4,520 athletes from 163 National Paralympic Committees. List Of Paralympic Medalists In Athletics
Athletics was one of the first eight sports to be competed in the Summer Paralympics which began in 1960. At the time it debuted, only track events were held: club throw, javelin throw, pentathlon (for male athletes) precision club throw and shot put which held between men and women. They were held between three classes per event: class A, B and C. The first multi-medallist Maria Scutti from Italy won almost all events for women by gaining nine gold medals and made her team top the medal table. In the 1964 Summer Paralympics, track events were featured for the first for only wheelchair competitors where 60m and 100m (for male competitors) races were in place as well as 4x40m relay race. Slalom and pentathlon events began in the 1968 Summer Paralympics. Christopher Scott (cyclist)
Christopher Ian Scott, OAM (born 29 October 1968) is a former Australian Paralympic cyclist. He has won ten medals at six Games from 1988 to 2008. Personal Scott was born in Gympie, Queensland, with cerebral palsy, as the youngest of three children. and moved to Brisbane with his family when he was two years old. At the age of eight, a soccer coach refused to let him join his team because he could not kick the ball with his right foot as well as he could with his left, a rule not enforced on able-bodied players. He consequently joined the next age group's soccer team so he could play with his brother. Scott attended Salisbury State High School and it was here where he began to participate more in sport and became involved in the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association. He works as a records clerk in the Brisbane suburb of Sunnybank. He has been married to Karen since March 2008 and has a stepdaughter. Fernando Ferreira (boccia)
Fernando Manuel da Costa Ferreira (born 23 September 1971) is a Portuguese boccia player. He has competed for his country and won medals at several Summer Paralympics. Career Ferreira won a bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Paralympics, a silver at the 1992 Summer Paralympics, both in the mixed individual C2 event. He then won a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in the Team C1-C2 event, and a bronze at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in the mixed team event. Ferreira competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. There he won a bronze medal in the BC2 event and gold medal as part of the team BC1-2 competition with a victory over New Zealand. He continued to compete at successive Paralympic Games, where he won a silver medal in the team event at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China, but failed to win a medal at the 2012 Games in London, England. Henrik Jorgensen (boccia)
Henrik Jorgensen is a Danish Paralympic athlete and boccia player who has competed in five Paralympic Games. Career Henrik made his Paralympic debut in 1984, competing in athletics and boccia. In New York/Stoke Mandeville 1984 he won three gold medals, the men's slalom and precision throw and individual boccia C1. In 1984, boccia was making its Paralympics debut, so he became one of its first champions. In the boccia, he beat Russell Cecchini of Canada in the final. Starting from Seoul 1988 he moved into boccia permanently and became a master player, winning three silver and two bronze medals in the sport. In Barcelona 1992, he won the individual bronze medal match against Juan Tellechea from Spain. Henrik had lost in the semifinal to James Thomson from the USA.
