List Of Winners Of The Chicago Marathon
The Chicago Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors, has been contested by men and women annually since 1977. Since 1983, it has been held annually in October. The United States had been represented by the most Chicago Marathon winners (nine men and twelve women). After a seventh consecutive win by a Kenyan man in 2009, Kenyan men have won more times (ten) than men representing any other country. The United Kingdom is in third place in total victories (eight), victories by men (five) and victories by women (three). All four of Brazil's victors have been men, and all three of Portugal's winners have been women. History The first six pairs of races were swept by the United States. Runners representing the United Kingdom won both races in 1996 (Paul Evans and Marian Sutton). Evans Kiprop Cheruiyot (born May 10, 1982, in Kapkoi village, Keiyo District) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon. He started out as a half marathon runner, taking wins in Rotterdam and Nairobi, and won his debut marathon race in Milan Marathon, Milan in 2007. He won the Chicago Marathon in 2008, running a personal best of 2:06:25 hours. Cheruiyot has also represented Kenya internationally and was the bronze medallist at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships. Background A mechanic by training, Cheruiyot is the seventh-born of a family of nine. After graduating from Kapkoi Primary School, in Rift Valley Province's Keiyo District, he took a mechanical engineering and driving course upon joining the National Youth Service (NYS). Felix Limo (born 22 August 1980) is a Kenyan former long-distance runner, who specialized in the marathon. Limo held the 15 Kilometres road running world record from November 2001 to November 2010, where he lost the record to Leonard Komon. Limo set his record of 41:29 minutes in Nijmegen, the Netherlands when winning the Zevenheuvelenloop race. Deriba Merga of Ethiopia equalled the time in 2009. He won the Portugal Half Marathon in 2002. He debuted at the 2003 Amsterdam Marathon, finishing second timing 2:06.42, only three seconds slower than William Kipsang, who set a course record. Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot
Robert "Mwafrika" Kipkoech Cheruiyot (born 26 September 1978 in Kapsabet, Kenya), sometimes known as Omar Ahmed, is a Kenyan marathon runner and is the former record holder and four-time winner of the Boston Marathon. Early career Cheruiyot trained running while at school, but was unable to pay school fees and became a high school drop out. He ended up working at a barber shop in Mosoriot, but could hardly buy a meal with his low salary. Later he managed to access Moses Tanui's training camp in Kaptagat. Soon thereafter he made a breakthrough by winning a local 10K race in 2001 and headed for international competitions. Cheruiyot won the Roma-Ostia Half Marathon in March 2002. His marathon debut, Milan Marathon in December 2002 saw three top finishers - Cheruiyot, Mike Rotich and Daniele Caimmi all posting the same time, 2:08:59 hours, but Cheruiyot emerged the winner.
