This is a worldwide list of people who were killed for being transgender. The list does not include suicides, accidental deaths, or premature deaths. Some of the perpetrators in these cases cite the trans panic defense. Violence against transgender people is also known as trans bashing. Liddy Bacroff
Liddy Bacroff; born Heinrich Habitz (19 August 1908 – 6 January 1943) was a performer and sex worker of Weimar Republic era, persecuted and killed by the Nazi regime during World War II. Bacroff rejected the male sex assigned at birth and self-identified as a "transvestite". Bacroff was imprisoned several times for "homosexual acts" under Paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code and ultimately killed in the Mauthausen concentration camp. Life Liddy Bacroff was first raised by her grandparents, and then adopted by Joseph Habitz, the later husband of her mother. Upon adoption she was given the legal name ''Heinrich Habitz'', which later would not be changed. Bacroff was considered "difficult to raise" and got sent to reformatory for a year. A trans woman or transgender woman is a woman who was assigned male at birth. Trans women have a female gender identity and may experience gender dysphoria (distress brought upon by the discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their sex assigned at birth). Sonia Rescalvo Zafra (1946 – 6 October 1991) was a Spanish trans woman who was murdered by a group of neo-Nazis in the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona on 6 October 1991. Her murder is notable for being the first known case in Spain of a person being murdered for being transgender. Background Sonia was born in Cuenca, Spain in 1946 to parents Leopoldo Rescalvo and Dolores Zafra. She moved to Barcelona at the age of 16 and began working as a showgirl in theatres on the Avinguda del Paral·lel. Later in life, she fell on hard times and became homeless and addicted to drugs, turning to sex work to survive.
