Alioune Diop University Of Bambey
Alioune Diop University of Bambey (french: Université Alioune Diop de Bambey) is a public higher education institution located in Bambey in the Diourbel region of west-central Senegal. The university is a member of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie. History Created in January 2007, the Regional University College of Bambey was converted into a university in November 2009 (Decree n° 2009-1221). It was part of the Senegalese government’s efforts to decentralise higher-education provision, seeking to encourage youth to stay in rural areas and to provide educational programmes appropriate to these contexts. In August 2011, the institution took the name "Alioune Diop University of Bambey", in tribute to Alioune Diop, founder of the magazine ''Présence africaine''. Cheikh Anta Diop University
Cheikh Anta Diop University (french: Université Cheikh Anta Diop or UCAD), also known as the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar, is a university in Dakar, Senegal. It is named after the Senegalese physicist, historian and anthropologist Cheikh Anta Diop and has an enrollment of over 60,000. History Cheikh Anta Diop University predates Senegalese independence and grew out of several French institutions set up by the colonial administration. In 1918, the French created the "école africaine de médecine" (African medical school), mostly to serve white and Métis students but also open to the small educated elite of the four free towns of Senegal with nominal French citizenship. In 1936, under the Popular Front government in France, Dakar became home to the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire (IFAN), an institute for the study of African culture. Gaston Berger University
Gaston Berger University (GBU), or L'Université Gaston Berger (UGB), located some outside Saint-Louis, was the second university established in Senegal (the first being Cheikh Anta Diop University). Originally the University of Saint-Louis, it was renamed for Gaston Berger, an important French-Senegalese philosopher, on December 4, 1996. History The first stone was laid by Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor on January 14, 1975. Established officially by law no. 90-03 of January 2, 1990, GBU welcomed its first class of six hundred students on December 17, 1990. The first rector was Ahmadou Lamine Ndiaye, who held office from January 1990 until November 1999. Amadou Hampaté Bâ University
Amadou is a spongy material derived from ''Fomes fomentarius'' and similar fungi that grow on the bark of coniferous and angiosperm trees, and have the appearance of a horse's hoof (thus the name "hoof fungus"). It is also known as the "tinder fungus" and is useful for starting slow-burning fires. The fungus must be removed from the tree, the hard outer layer scraped off, and then thin strips of the inner spongy layer cut for use as tinder. Amadou was a precious resource to ancient people, allowing them to start a fire by catching sparks from flint struck against iron pyrites. Bits of fungus preserved in peat have been discovered at the Mesolithic site of Star Carr in the UK, modified presumably for this purpose. Remarkable evidence for its utility is provided by the discovery of the 5,000-year-old remains of "Ötzi the Iceman", who carried it on a cross-alpine excursion before his death and subsequent ice-entombment. Suffolk University Dakar Campus
Suffolk University, Dakar Campus was a division of Suffolk University (of Boston, Massachusetts) in Dakar, Senegal. It was located on the grounds of the École Nationale d'Économie Appliquée (ENEA). The spring 2011 semester concluded its operations, with some students transferring to Boston to complete their studies. History The Dakar Campus was opened in 1999 as a branch of Suffolk University. The campus was closed in 2011 after the university lost approximately $10 million on the venture, with the remaining 104 students at the Dakar Campus transferring to the main university campus in Boston.
