In the following there are lists of sites of notable radio transmitters. During the early history of radio many countries had only a few high power radio stations, operated either by the government or large corporations, which broadcast to the population or to other countries. Because of the large number of transmission sites, this list is not complete. Outside of Europe senders and repeater stations are emphatically presented from international services. Radio Transmitter
In electronics and telecommunications, a radio transmitter or just transmitter (often abbreviated as XMTR or TX in technical documents) is an electronic device which produces radio waves with an antenna with the purpose of signal transmission to a radio receiver. The transmitter itself generates a radio frequency alternating current, which is applied to the antenna. When excited by this alternating current, the antenna radiates radio waves. Transmitters are necessary component parts of all electronic devices that communicate by radio, such as radio (audio) and television broadcasting stations, cell phones, walkie-talkies, wireless computer networks, Bluetooth enabled devices, garage door openers, two-way radios in aircraft, ships, spacecraft, radar sets and navigational beacons. Vakarel Transmitter
The Vakarel Transmitter was a large broadcasting facility for long- and medium wave near Vakarel, Bulgaria. The Vakarel Transmitter was inaugurated in 1937. It had one directional antenna consisting of three guyed masts and another consisting of two masts. The most remarkable mast of the Vakarel Transmitter was the Blaw-Knox tower, built in 1937 by the company Telefunken. Along with Lakihegy Tower, Hungary, Riga LVRTC Transmitter, Latvia and Lisnagarvey Radio Mast, Northern Ireland it was one of the few Blaw-Knox towers in Europe until its demolition on 16 September 2020. The transmitter was shut down at 22:00 UTC on 31 December 2014. Kaliakra Transmitter
The Kaliakra transmitter was a huge facility for medium wave broadcasting in Bulgaria, which was built after 1988 by the former Soviet Union as a relay transmitter for Southeast Europe. After the collapse of communism in 1989, there was no need for the facility and work was stopped. At that time, nine of the planned 10 masts were already completed and work on the final mast had begun. Some masts were already equipped with cage antennas, while others remained bare. All masts of the station were grounded guyed lattice masts with a triangular cross section, equipped with a cage antenna. Their height varied between and . The masts could work as either a directional antenna with low pattern by using two masts or as a highly directional antenna by using eight masts. Transmitter Wavre
The Wavre radio transmitter is a facility for Fm, Dab+ and TV broadcasting near Wavre in Belgium. Formerly the mediumwave transmissions used a grounded 250-metre-high guyed mast. Furthermore, there was a backup mast for medium wave transmissions, which was 90 metres high. For shortwave broadcasting there were several directional antennas and a curtain antenna. For the FM/TV/DAB transmission a free-standing lattice tower with a height of 232 metres is used. This tower whose top is guyed at four horizontal crossbars similar to Grodno TV Tower replaces the mast used for FM/TV transmissions which fell during a storm on 13 October 1983. Sendeturm Dobratsch
The Sendeturm Dobratsch (Dobratsch Transmitter Tower) is a radio tower on the Dobratsch mountain, the easternmost peak of the Gailtal Alps near Villach in Carinthia, Austria. The transmitter was built in 1971 and succeeded a provisional facility on the lower Pyramidenkogel mountain near Klagenfurt. It consists of a concrete tower which carries a guyed steel tube mast on the top, similar to the Gerbrandy Tower in the Netherlands. The tower is located at an altitude of above sea-level, its total height is . The transmission facility can be reached by a private cable car from Bad Bleiberg. The Dobratsch Transmitter Tower is used for directional radio services and FM broadcasting as well as for DVB-T transmission of several TV programmes. 125,000 watts ERP make it the strongest transmitter of Austria. Kronstorf Transmitter
The Kronstorf Transmitter was a mediumwave (and, starting in 1967, shortwave) broadcasting facility near Kronstorf, Austria. Its construction started in 1950 by the American Forces occupying Austria, and went in service on 1952-03-01. The transmitter, used for broadcasting in Soviet-controlled Austria, consisted of one 274 m and two 137 m guyed masts. On 1954-03-15, the facility was given to the Austrian broadcasting company, Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). A 274 m (900 ft) and a 137 m (450 ft) mast were dismantled in 1956, and then rebuilt at the Bisamberg transmission facility. There were further plans in the 1970s to renovate the transmitter, but as most of Austria is mountainous areas, medium wave propagation was not an efficient transmission method. The Kronstorf Transmitter was shut down in March 1994, and on 1995-01-26 the transmission mast was demolished by explosives.
