This is a list of terrae, or major landmasses, on Venus. In accordance to the International Astronomical Union's rules of planetary nomenclature, they are named after goddesses of love. There are only three named terrae on Venus: * Aphrodite Terra is named after the Greek love goddess, the counterpart to Venus in Roman mythology. Planetary nomenclature, like terrestrial nomenclature, is a system of uniquely identifying features on the surface of a planet or natural satellite so that the features can be easily located, described, and discussed. Since the invention of the telescope, astronomers have given names to the surface features they have discerned, especially on the Moon and Mars. To found an authority on planetary nomenclature, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) was organized in 1919 to designate and standardize names for features on Solar System bodies. Ishtar Terra
Ishtar Terra is the second largest of the three continental terrae regions on the planet Venus, the others being Aphrodite Terra and Lada Terra. It is a highland region named after the Akkadian goddess Ishtar, and is found in the north of the planet. Note that Ishtar Terra is located near the negative pole if Venus's rotation is defined as prograde by the right-hand rule. The rotation of the planet is commonly characterized as retrograde in order to correlate its northern hemisphere with Earth's, in which case Ishtar Terra is near the north pole. Lada Terra, named for a Lada (mythology), Slavic goddess of Love, is a major landmass near the south pole of Venus which is centered at 60°S and 20°E and has a diameter of . It is defined by the International Astronomical Union as one of the three "major landmasses," or planetary nomenclature#terra, terrae, of Venus. The term "landmass" is not analogous to the landmass on Earth, as there are no apparent oceans on Venus. Maxwell Montes is a mountain range on the planet Venus, of which Skadi Mons is the List of tallest mountains in the Solar System, highest. Lada and Lado are alleged Slavic deities. Lada was first mentioned around 1405–1412 in the sermons of Lucas of Wielki Koźmin, which warned against worshipping Lada and other gods during spring ceremonies and folk performances. The deities owe their popularity to Polish priest Jan Długosz, who described Lada as a goddess and a god of war in his works and compared her to the Roman Mars, to Aleksandr Faminstyn, who recognized the name ''Lada'' in Russian songs as attributed to the goddess of marriage, and to scholar Boris Rybakov, who insisted on recognizing her historicity.
