Cruise lines have opted to increase capacity by Jumboisation, stretching their current ships. Known as lengthening, the process of enlarging a cruise ship usually includes cutting the ship in half and adding a new midsection, adding more cabins and public areas. Jumboisation
Jumboization is a technique in shipbuilding consisting of enlarging a ship by adding an entire section to it. By contrast with refitting or installation of equipment, jumboization is a long and complex endeavour which can require a specialized shipyard. Enlarging a ship by jumboization allows an increase in its capacity and revenue potential without needing to purchase or build an entirely new ship. This technique has been used on cruise ships and tankers, as well as smaller vessels like sailing or fishing ships. Methods Large ships often have a long midsection with a uniform profile. In such cases, the ship is cut in two pieces and an additional section is inserted in between. This operation must be performed in a drydock. On large ships, the additional sections are typically 20 to 30 metres long, consisting of an oil tank, a cargo ship hold, or a group of cabins, depending on the type of ship. MS Marella Dream
Motor ship, MS ''Marella Dream'' was a cruise ship built in 1986 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, West Germany as ''Homeric'' for Home Lines, and their last newbuild to remain in active service. In 1988 she was sold to Holland America Line, renamed ''Westerdam'', and in 1990 lengthened by at Meyer Werft. In 2002 she was transferred to the fleet of Costa Cruises and renamed ''Costa Europa''. In April 2010 she was taken on a ten-year charter by Thomson Cruises, under the name ''Thomson Dream''. Following the 2017 renaming of Thomson Cruises to Marella Cruises, TUI Group also changed the ship's name to ''Marella Dream''. She was retired from Marella Cruises in November 2020 and was sold, then broken up in 2022. ''Margaritaville at Sea Paradise'' is a cruise ship owned and operated by Margaritaville at Sea. The ship was built in 1991 in Italy for Costa Cruises as ''Costa Classica''. In 2000, a planned lengthening and refit was cancelled at the last moment. She was renamed ''Costa neoClassica'' in 2014, then left Costa fleet in 2018 when sold to Bahamas Paradise as ''Grand Classica''. MS ''Crown Iris'' is a cruise ship owned by the Israeli cruise line Mano Maritime since 2018. She was originally ordered by Birka Line as MS ''Birka Queen'' from the Wärtsilä Marine Turku Shipyard in Finland, but completed by Kvaerner Masa-Yards as MS ''Royal Majesty'' for Majesty Cruise Line. MS ''Windward'' was a cruise ship that was built in 1993 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France for Kloster Cruise (Norwegian Cruise Line) as ''Windward''. In 1998 she was lengthened at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany and renamed ''Norwegian Wind''. In 2007 she was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises as ''SuperStar Aquarius''. Lloyd Werft
Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH is a dockyard in Bremerhaven. It was founded in 1863 by the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd, first mainly used as a repair workshop for the company’s own merchant fleet. This new yard was established in exchange and addition to the former small Lloyd-workshop in Bremen which was already founded in 1857. In the 1970s, the shipyard became member of the Bremer Vulkan, Vulkan Group. As of 2016, the Lloyd facility is the last remaining major dockyard in Bremerhaven. It employs 500 workers and occupies .
