List Of State By-elections In Malaysia
Casual vacancies in the Dewan Undangan Negeri (state legislative assembly) are filled by by-elections, which may occur when a member of the Dewan Undangan Negeri dies, resigns or for some other reason. Members of the Dewan Undangan Negeri normally tender the resignation to the Speaker. The Speaker has a discretion as to when to call a by-election and may not call one at all, for example, if a general election or a state election is imminent. Brackets around a date indicate that the candidate was unopposed when nominations closed. Dewan Undangan Negeri
In Malaysia, a state legislative assembly, officially Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN), is the legislative branch of the state governments in each of the 13 Malaysian states. Members of a state legislative assembly comprises elected representatives from single-member constituencies during state elections through the first-past-the-post voting system. The assemblies have powers to enact state laws as provided for by the Constitution of Malaysia. The majority party in each assembly forms the state government, and the leader of the majority party becomes Menteri Besar (for states with hereditary rulers) or Chief Minister (for states without hereditary rulers) of the state. The state legislative assemblies are unicameral, unlike the bicameral Parliament of Malaysia. The hereditary rulers or Yang di-Pertua Negeri (governors) are vested with powers to dissolve their respective state legislative assemblies on the advice of the menteri besar or chief minister. 2024 Nenggiri By-election
The 2024 Nenggiri by-election was held on 17 August 2024 for the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly seat of Nenggiri. The by-election was called following the disqualification of the incumbent, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, on 19 June 2024 due to his support for the Anwar Ibrahim government. Mohd Azizi had served as a Member of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly for Nenggiri since 2023, and also as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gua Musang. In this by-election, Barisan Nasional's Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani defeated Perikatan Nasional's Mohd Rizwadi Ismail by a majority of 3,352 votes. Democratic Action Party
The Democratic Action Party (DAP; ) is a social democracy, social democratic and Secularism, secular political party in Malaysia, sitting on the Centre-left politics, centre-left of the political spectrum. As one of four component parties of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, it formed the federal government after defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2018 Malaysian general election, ending the party's 53 year-long stay in the opposition. However, before the coalition finished its first term, defections from partnering parties caused it to lose power after 22 months, culminating in the 2020 Malaysian political crisis. Pakatan Harapan (PH; stylised as HARAPAN; ) is a Malaysian Parliamentary group, political coalition consisting of Centre-left politics, centre-left political parties which was formed in 2015 to succeed the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. Lee Kee Hiong
Lee Kee Hiong (16 March 1966 – 21 March 2024) was a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kuala Kubu Baharu from May 2013 to her death in March 2024. She was a member and State Women Chief of Selangor of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly Pakatan Rakyat (PR), Barisan Alternatif (BA) and Gagasan Rakyat (GR) coalitions. The 2024 Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election was a by-election for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly seat of Kuala Kubu Baharu that was held on 11 May 2024. It was called following the death of incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong on 21 March 2024 of cancer. Lee had served as Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Kuala Kubu Baharu, serving since 2013 for three terms. It was the first Selangor state by-election since the 2023 Selangor state election. The last time Selangor had a by-election was during the 2019 Semenyih by-election. Gastritis
Gastritis is the inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It may occur as a short episode or may be of a long duration. There may be no symptoms but, when symptoms are present, the most common is upper abdominal pain (see dyspepsia). Nor Zamri bin Latiff (24 September 1968 – 24 May 2024) was a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Sungai Bakap from August 2023 to his death in office in May 2024. 2024 Sungai Bakap By-election
The 2024 Sungai Bakap by-election was a by-election for the Penang State Legislative Assembly seat of Sungai Bakap that was held on 6 July 2024. It was called following the death of incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff on 24 May 2024 due to gastritis. Nor Zamri has served as Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Sungai Bakap since 2023. It is the first Penang state by-election since the 2023 Penang state election.
