This is a list of notable satirical news websites which have a satirical bent, are parodies of news, or consist of fake news stories for mainly humorous purposes. For magazines published on paper, see List of satirical magazines. Definition The best-known example is ''The Onion'', the online version of which started in 1996. News satire is a type of parody presented in a format typical of mainstream journalism, but instead contains satirical content. It is popular on the web, where it is relatively easy to mimic a credible news source and stories may achieve wide distribution from nearly any site. These sites are not to be confused with fake news websites, which deliberately publish hoaxes in an attempt to profit from gullible readers. In the English Wikipedia, English version of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, notability is a Criteria of truth, criterion to determine whether a topic merits a separate Wikipedia article. It is described in the guideline "Wikipedia:Notability". In general, notability is an attempt to assess whether the topic has "gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time" as evidenced by significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the topic". ClickHole
ClickHole is a satirical website that parodies clickbait websites such as BuzzFeed and Upworthy. It was launched on June 12, 2014, by ''The Onion,'' in conjunction with that publication's decision to stop its print edition and shift its focus exclusively to the internet. According to ClickHole's senior editor, Jermaine Affonso, the website is "The Onion's response to click-bait content" and serves as "a parody of online media". Critics noted that, on a deeper level, ClickHole illustrates the shallow nature of social media content and media sites' desperation to share such content. On February 3, 2020, the website was acquired by the team behind Cards Against Humanity. After the purchase, the website's employees became its majority owners, and retain complete creative control. ''The Civilian'' was a satirical New Zealand website. It was started in 2013 by Ben Uffindell, who finished a degree in political science at University of Canterbury in 2012. It has been compared to the US satirical website/newspaper ''The Onion''. In April 2013 ''The Civilian'' received about 15,000 page views per day, and in a May 2013 interview Uffindell stated an average of 20,000–25,000 page views per day. The site caused controversy when Conservative Party leader Colin Craig threatened to sue for defamation over satirical quotes regarding his stance on same-sex marriage. In June 2014, Uffindell announced through his website his intention of forming a political party. The Civilian Party was registered by the Electoral Commission on 11 August 2014. The Chaser are an Australian satirical comedy group, best known for their television programmes and satirical news masthead. The group take their name from their satirical newspaper, a publication known to challenge conventions of taste. The group's motto is "Striving for Mediocrity in a World of Excellence". Founding The Chaser's earliest foundation was a satirical school paper called ''The Tiger'', created by future members Charles Firth, Dominic Knight and Chas Licciardello as a way to "wring as much money as heycould out of their expensive private school" while attending Sydney Grammar. The Burrard Street Journal (or BSJ) is an online satire news website based in Vancouver, BC. The site gained notoriety in August 2016 after a number of websites reported a BSJ article about then President Obama moving to Canada as fact. Many other Burrard Street Journal articles and videos have been reported as real news. In July 2016, an article titled 'Trump Claims America Should Never Have Given Canada Its Independence' was shared over 9,000 times and in March 2016, an edited BSJ video reporting Donald Trump building a wall with Canada was shared over 50,000 times and has received 4.5 million views as of March 2018.
