The Captain Cook Hotel is a heritage-listed pub located at 33–35 Kent Street, in the inner city Sydney suburb of Millers Point, Australia. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The "Eora people" was the name given to the coastal Aboriginal people around Sydney. Central Sydney is therefore often referred to as "Eora Country". Within the City of Sydney local government area, the traditional owners are the Cadigal and Wangal bands of the Eora. With the invasion of the Sydney region, the Cadigal and Wangal people were decimated but there are descendants still living in Sydney today. The development of the northern areas of Kent Street was stifled for many years due to the natural barrier of the steep rocky outcrop around what was then known as Windmill Hill (later Flagstaff and then Observatory Hill). Hero of Waterloo Hotel is a heritage-listed pub located at 81–83 Lower Fort Street, in the inner city Sydney suburb of Millers Point in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1843 to 1844. The property is privately owned. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The site of the Hero of Waterloo Hotel on the south side of Windmill Street was located in the government reserve. In 1831 the Town Surveyor, Ambrose Hallen reported that John Clarke had fenced in the site and his ownership was challenged. Clarke produced a legal transfer from the son of John Leighton (Jack the Miller, after who Millers Point was named). David Leighton had purchased it from Patrick Marmount who was said to have received it as compensation from Governor Lachlan Macquarie for land resumed for the new Military Hospital. Harbour View Hotel
Harbour View Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel at 18 Lower Fort Street, in the inner city Sydney suburb of Millers Point, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Prevost & Waterman and built from 1922 to 1923. It is privately owned. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The first Harbour View Hotel was built in 1843 on the opposite corner. The present site was occupied by "Oliffe Terrace". In 1913 both sites were resumed. By 1922 the terraces had been demolished, and by 1924 the present hotel building had been constructed. Construction of the hotel was funded by Tooth and Co., under a 50-year lease. In 1927 the Sydney Harbour Trust assumed control of the site from the Resumed Properties Dept. Licencees of the hotel included William Ireland 1924-1941 and Gavin Miller 1941–1949. Exchange Hotel (Balmain)
The Exchange Hotel is a heritage-listed pub located in Balmain, a suburb in the inner west region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. History The Exchange Hotel was the last pub to be built during the local boom of the 1880s. It was also the largest in the Balmain and Rozelle area. The original building consisted of 40 rooms connected with corridors. The pub became a major meeting point for the local community and in the early years as the centre for union members, including those of the Balmain Labourers Union which later went on to become the Painters and Dockers Union. The building is a three-storey structure constructed in the Victorian Free Classical style. It has rendered masonry and a verandah with iron lace and timber lattice decorations to the middle level with timber posts to footpath. Ettamogah Pub
The Ettamogah Pub is a cartoon pub that was featured in the now defunct '' Australasian Post'' magazine. The cartoonist Ken Maynard, loving empty spaces and having nothing around him, enjoyed an area just outside Albury at Table Top, New South Wales, named Ettamogah, thus christening the eponymous name of his now famous pub the "Ettamogah Pub". The "Ettamogah Pub" chain of such pubs now exist in various parts of Australia including Sydney in New South Wales, and in Western Australia. Albury The pub was built by businessman Lindsay Cooper and first opened in 1987. The aim was to create a themed family restaurant which would become a tourist attraction. Dry Dock Hotel
The Dry Dock Hotel is a heritage-listed pub located in Balmain, a suburb in the inner west region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The pub is the oldest licensed hotel in Balmain and one of a number of establishments which formed an integral part of the shipbuilding and industrial heritage of the local area. History The origins of the Dry Dock Hotel can be traced to the Dock Inn located at 4 Thames Street between 1857 and 1861. From here, the pub moved to 42-44 Mort Street between 1865 and 1866. The land on which the pub currently stands was part of a much larger grant to colonial surgeon Dr William Balmain made in 1800 by Governor John Hunter. The licensee Thomas Wakfer, purchased the property on the current site from James McCallum in 1867 for the sum of A£295.
