A political family (also referred to as political dynasty) is a family in which multiple members are involved in politics — particularly electoral politics. Members may be related by blood or marriage; often several generations or multiple siblings may be involved. A royal family or dynasty in a monarchy is generally considered to not be a "political family," although the later descendants of a royal family have played political roles in a republic (such as the Arslan family of Lebanon). United National Party
The United National Party (UNP; , ) is a Centre-right politics, centre-right political party in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1946, the party was one of Sri Lanka's two main parties for several decades. The UNP has served as the country's ruling party, or as part of its governing coalition, during the periods 1947–1956, 1965–1970, 1977–1994, 2001–2004, 2015–2019, and 2022–2024. After suffering a major split in the lead-up to the 2020 Sri Lankan parliamentary election, 2020 parliamentary elections, the UNP suffered a major collapse, with the party only winning one Appointed and National List Member of Parliament, national list seat and losing all its votes to the new Samagi Jana Balawegaya alliance. Sri Lanka Freedom Party
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP; ; ) is a centre-left political party in Sri Lanka. Founded by S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike in 1951, the party was one of Sri Lanka's two main parties from the 1950s to the 2010s, serving as the main rival of the centre-right United National Party. Following a split in the late 2010s and subsequent electoral losses, the influence of the party has since diminished. The party is generally considered as having a democratic socialist or progressive economic agenda and is often associated with Sinhalese nationalist parties. The party follows a non-aligned foreign policy but has historically had close ties to socialist nations. Henry Abeywickrema
Henry Abeywickrema (27 December 1905 - 29 August 1976) was a Sri Lankan politician. Abeywickrema was born in 1905 in Baddegama and received his education at Richmond College (Sri Lanka), Richmond College and St. Aloysius' College (Galle), St. Aloysious' College in Galle. Following the death of his older brother, Simon Abeywickrema, Simon on 2 May 1948, Abeywickrema contested the July by-election for his brother's seat of Baddegama Electoral District, Baddegama. He was however soundly beaten by over 6,500 votes by the United National Party candidate, H. W. Amarasuriya. In 1951 he joined the newly formed Sri Lanka Freedom Party. At the 1952 Ceylonese parliamentary election, 2nd parliamentary election in May 1952, he defeated the sitting member, H. W. Amarasuriya from Baddegama electorate, by 7,752 votes. Sunday Times (Sri Lanka)
''The Sunday Times'' is a weekly Sri Lankan broadsheet initially published by the now defunct Times Group, until 1991, when it was taken over by Wijeya Newspapers. The paper features articles of journalists such as defence columnist Iqbal Athas and Ameen Izzadeen. The daily counterpart of the Sri Lankan ''Sunday Times'' is the '' Daily Mirror''. History The first ''Times'' newspaper, '' Ceylon Times'' was established in 1846. The Times of Ceylon Ltd, which existed for 131 years, was taken over by the Sri Lankan government in 1977. Ranjith Wijewardena, the son of D. R. Wijewardena, and the chairman of Wijeya Newspapers Ltd, purchased the company which was under liquidation, in 1986. However, the newspaper ''The Sunday Times'' came into being in 1991. Simon Abeywickrema
Simon Abeywickrema (1903 - 2 May 1948) was a Sri Lankan politician. Simon Abeywickrema was born in 1903 in Baddegama and received his education at Richmond College and St. Aloysious' College in Galle. Abeywickrema unsuccessfully contested for the State Council, in the Udugama electorate, at the 1931 and 1936 elections but was subsequently elected in a 1938 by-election. When the United National Party was formed in 1946, he was selected as the party's vice president. Abeywickrema was elected, representing Baddegama, at the 1st parliamentary election in 1947. He served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport in the D. S. Senanayake cabinet. Abeywickrema died in office on 2 May 1948. In the subsequent July by-election his younger brother, Henry, unsuccessfully contested the seat of Baddegama, losing to H. W. Amarasuriya. Akmeemana Electoral District
Akmeemana electoral district was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between March 1960 and February 1989. The district was named after the town of Akmeemana in Galle District, Southern Province. The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation electoral system for electing members of Parliament. Sumanadasa Abeywickrama
Sumanadasa Abeywickrama (5 February 1928 – 27 February 2006) was a Sri Lankan politician and a Member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. Abeywickrama was the son of Don Hendrick Abeywickrama, a Vidane Arachchi in Morawaka, Sri Lanka and Angelina (née Jayawickreme Wijetunge). He married Enid Dias Nagahawatta, former principal of the School of Nursing, Galle. They had three children. Abeywickrama joined the United National Party and was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Akmeemana Electoral District at the 8th Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election in 1977. He served as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Development and Research in the Jayewardene cabinet. Abeywickrama contributed immensely to the development of the Galle District, particularly in his electorate. Under the village reawakening concept, he succeeded in building the highest number of housing units for homeless people in the area.
