Wilson Ruffin Abbott
Wilson Ruffin Abbott (1801 – 1876) was an American-born Black Canadian and successful businessman and landowner in Toronto, Ontario. He was the father of Anderson Ruffin Abbott, Canada's first Black physician. Biography Born to a Scotch-Irish father and a free West African mother in Richmond, Virginia, Wilson Ruffin Abbott left home when he was aged 15 to work as a steward on a Mississippi River steamer. He married Ellen Toyer, and moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he opened a general grocery store, but left in 1834 after receiving a warning that his store was to be pillaged. In late 1835 or early 1836, he moved to Toronto, Upper Canada, where he prospered as a businessman. He served in the militia that protected Toronto from the rebels in the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion and was elected to Toronto city council in 1840. Wilson Heredia (born March 30, 1972) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played two seasons with the Texas Rangers. He batted and threw right-handed. Career Heredia was signed by the Rangers as an amateur free agent prior to the 1990 season. He made his major league debut early in the season, appearing in six games before being sent back down to the minor leagues. Later that season, he and Scott Podsednik were the "players to be named later" that the Rangers dealt to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Bobby Witt, and he spent the remainder of the 1995 season with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. After the 1996 season the Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Marlins. Woodrow Wilson Goode Sr. (born August 19, 1938) is a former Mayor of Philadelphia and the first African American to hold that office. He served from 1984 to 1992, a period which included the controversial MOVE police action and house bombing in 1985. Goode was also a community activist, chair of the state Public Utility Commission, and managing director for the City of Philadelphia.
