Slovakia
Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the west, and the Czech Republic to the northwest. Slovakia's mostly mountainous territory spans about , hosting a population exceeding 5.4 million. The capital and largest city is Bratislava, while the second largest city is Košice. The Slavs arrived in the territory of the present-day Slovakia in the 5th and 6th centuries. From the late 6th century, parts of modern Slovakia were incorporated into the Pannonian Avars, Avar Khaghanate. In the 7th century, the Slavs played a significant role in the creation of Samo's Empire. Anton Lehmden
Anton Lehmden (2 January 1929 – 7 August 2018) was an Austrian painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Lehmden was a co-founder, together with Ernst Fuchs, Maître Leherb (Helmut Leherb), Rudolf Hausner, Arik Brauer, Fritz Janschka and Wolfgang Hutter, of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He settled in Vienna after 1945 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 1948 he was represented in exhibitions of the Vienna Art-Club and has also been represented in many international exhibitions. He taught in Istanbul from 1962/63 and from 1971 to 1997 was Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Between 1947 and 1950 he went to participate in several exhibitions and important trips to Italy, which was the time his first major artworks were created. Lehmden's early works were inspired by his love for Chinese landscape painting, and his focus was mainly the lyrical moment in the landscape. Ladislav Záborský
Ladislav Záborský (22 January 1921 in Tisovec – 31 December 2016 in Martin) was a Slovak painter. Life He went to high school in Banská Bystrica and studied at the Drawing and Painting Department of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, his main professors were Martin Benka, Gustáv Mallý and . In 1945 he married Gabriela Bartošová. Together they had three children: Vladimír (born in 1946, living in Bojnice), Terézia (*1947, living in Croix, France), Mária (*1951, living in Martin). After graduation he worked as high school teacher in Martin. Because of his religious activities he was condemned to seven year imprisonment and stayed from 1953 to 1957 in the prisons of Ružomberok, Prague and Valdice. He experienced interrogation, intimidation, demanding prison conditions and threatening, too. Adam Szentpétery
Szentpétery Ádám (; born 24 February 1956) is a Hungarian artist in Slovakia and the Department Head/Professor of the Studio of Contemporary Image at the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University of Košice, Slovakia. He is known primarily for his abstract painting with strong geometrically organized canvases in a highly original manner with a very intense but at the same time refined colorism. Life and career Szentpétery was born in Rožňava, Czechoslovakia. From 1971 to 1975 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Košice (department of graphic arts). Tibor Spitz
Tibor Spitz (born 1929) is a Slovak-born artist and Holocaust survivor. After escaping from communist Czechoslovakia to the West, he lived and worked in Canada and the United States. He currently resides in Kingston, New York. Biography In 1929, Tibor Spitz was born in a small town called Dolný Kubín in the high mountains of northern Slovakia, at that time part of Czechoslovakia. His father was a cantor for the Jewish community and his mother was a teacher. He survived Holocaust at age 15, studied chemistry in Prague, and in 1968 escaped to the West to live in Canada and later in the United States. After his career as a scientist, he became a professional artist and lecturer on Holocaust. Karl Sovanka
Karl Sovanka (Karol Šovánka) (7 March 1893 in Uhrovec, near Trenčín, Slovakia – 1961 in Östringen, Germany) was a painter and sculptor. He is world-known for his paintings of animals and hunting motifs. He was a famous painter and sculptor from the town of Kežmarok. He studied in Budapest (prof. Ľudovít Mátray), in Brussels (prof. van der Stappen), and in Paris. He was a member of the Slovak painters club in Bratislava. Sovanka was painting countrysides, animals and hunting motifs in nature, and he also made some sculptures and glasses. Koloman Sokol
Koloman Sokol (12 December 1902 – 12 January 2003) was one of the most prominent Slovak painters, graphic artists and illustrators. He was a founder of modern Slovak graphic art. Biography Koloman Sokol was born in Liptovský Mikuláš. He attended the private schools of Eugen Krón in Košice and Gustáv Mallý in Bratislava, as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he studied under Max Švabinský and Tavik Frantisek Simon. In Czechoslovakia, he became a member in the SČUG Hollar, an association of Czechoslovak graphic artist. Following a brief period of study with František Kupka in Paris, he accepted an invitation from the Mexican Ministry of Culture and Education to teach his work. He became a professor of graphic techniques at the Escuela de las Artes del Libro, which he helped found in 1938, and at the University of Mexico City from 1937 to 1941. Vladimír Popovič (27 November 1939 – 20 April 2025) was a Slovak painter, visual artist and academic. Julius Podlipny
Julius or Iulius Podlipny (most common renditions of the ; ; Hungarian: ''Podlipny Gyula''; Romanian: ''Iuliu Podlipny''; April 12, 1898 – January 15, 1991) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Czechoslovak and Romanian artist, best known for his work in drawing and his long period as teacher at the Art Lyceum in Timișoara. Ivan Pavle (born March 8, 1955) is a Demographics of Slovakia, Slovak painter with a distinct style focusing on the human form. He combines classical painting with the results of experimental painting to play with sensory perception. Life Pavle was born in Galanta, Slovakia to Matej Pavle and Alžbeta Pavleová.
