List Of Oldest Trees
This is a list of the oldest-known trees, as reported in reliable sources. Definitions of what constitutes an individual tree vary. In addition, tree ages are derived from a variety of sources, including documented "tree-ring" ( dendrochronological) count core samples, and from estimates. For these reasons, this article presents three lists of "oldest trees," each using varying criteria. There are three tables of trees, which are listed by age and species. The first table includes trees for which a minimum age has been directly determined, either through counting or cross-referencing tree rings or through radiocarbon dating. Many of these trees may be even older than their listed ages, but the oldest wood in the tree has rotted away. For some old trees, so much of the center is missing that their age cannot be directly determined. Instead, estimates are made based on the tree's size and presumed growth rate. Pollen
Pollen is a powdery substance produced by most types of flowers of seed plants for the purpose of sexual reproduction. It consists of pollen grains (highly reduced Gametophyte#Heterospory, microgametophytes), which produce male gametes (sperm cells). Los Ríos Region
The Los Ríos Region (Spanish: ''Región de Los Ríos'', , ''Region of the Rivers'') is one of Chile's 16 regions, the country's first-order administrative divisions. Its capital is Valdivia. It began to operate as a region on October 2, 2007, having been created by subdividing the Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. Cordillera Pelada
Cordillera Pelada (Spanish for Bald Range or Barren Range) is a mountain range in southern Los Ríos Region, southern Chile. It is located along the Pacific coast and forms part of the larger Chilean Coast Range. It got its name ''pelada'' from the Spanish word for bare or bald in reference to large fires that once burned the forests on the cordillera. From about 1750 to 1943, when the land between Maullín River and Valdivia was colonized by Spain and Chile, numerous fires of ''Fitzroya'' woods occurred in Cordillera Pelada. These fires were initiated by Spaniards, Chileans, and Europeans. Earlier, from 1397 to 1750 the ''Fitzroya'' woods of Cordillera Pelada also suffered from fires that originated from lightning strikes and indigenous inhabitants. Fitzroya
''Fitzroya'' is a monotypic genus in the cypress family. The single living species, ''Fitzroya cupressoides'', is a tall, long-lived conifer native to the Andes mountains and coastal regions of southern Chile, and only to the Argentine Andes, where it is an important member of the Valdivian temperate forests. Common names include ''lawal'' (in Mapudungun, Hispanicized as ''lahual''), ''alerce'' (, " larch" in Spanish), and Patagonian cypress. The genus was named in honour of Robert FitzRoy. The genus is ancient with it dating back to the Cretaceous of South America. Fossils are also known from the Paleogene of Tasmania, Australia (particularly from the now extinct ''Fitzroya tasmanensis''). Alerce Milenario
Alerce Milenario () or Gran Abuelo, also known in English as Great-Grandfather, is the largest tree in Chile's Alerce Costero National Park. While it has been on the list of oldest trees, this Alerce tree (''Fitzroya cupressoides)'' is now rivalling others to be possibly the oldest tree in the world. In 2020, Jonathan Barichivich and Antonio Lara, of the Austral University of Chile, used an increment borer to carefully retrieve a partial sample. Geography The Alerce Milenario Tree is located in a ravine, in the Alerce Coster National Park. The park is , and up to above sea level. It has a rainy temperate climate with rains all year round. White Mountains (California)
The White Mountains of California and Nevada are a triangular fault-block mountain, fault-block mountain range facing the Sierra Nevada (U.S.), Sierra Nevada across the upper Owens Valley. They extend for approximately as a greatly elevated plateau about wide on the south, narrowing to a point at the north, with elevations generally increasing south to north. Methuselah (pine Tree)
Methuselah is a -year-old Pinus longaeva, Great Basin bristlecone pine (''Pinus longaeva'') tree growing high in the White Mountains (California), White Mountains of Inyo County, California, Inyo County in eastern California. It is recognized as the non-Vegetative reproduction, clonal tree with the greatest confirmed age in the world. Donald Rusk Currey
Donald Rusk Currey (January 24, 1934 – June 6, 2004) was an American professor of geography. While known in academia for his extensive research and exploration of relics of the ancient Lake Bonneville in the eastern Great Basin, he was best known to the public for his controversial felling of Prometheus, the oldest living non-clonal organism known at the time, while a graduate student in 1964.
