Irish Singles Chart
The Irish Singles Chart is the Republic of Ireland's music industry standard singles popularity chart issued weekly by the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) and compiled on their behalf by the Official Charts Company. Chart rankings are based on sales, which are compiled through over-the-counter retail data captured electronically each day from retailers' EPOS systems. All major record shops, digital retailers and streaming services contribute to the chart, accounting for over 95% of the market. A new chart is compiled and released to the public by the Irish Recorded Music Association on Friday at noon. Each chart is dated with the "week-ending" date of the previous Thursday (i.e., the day before issue). The singles chart was first published on 1 October 1962, and covered the top ten singles of the previous week by record label shipments. Tina Reynolds
Philomena "Phil" Tully (née Quinn; born 1949/50), known by the stage name Tina Reynolds or simply Tina, is an Irish singer. Early life Born Philomena Quinn, she has tuberculosis from a young age and grew up in hospitals. Career Tina's career began after winning a talent contest at Butlins Skegness. She sang with the Mexicans showband from 1966 to 1968. Having taken part in the 1972 National Song Contest to choose Ireland's Eurovision song singing ''Don't Need Your Sympathy'', she represented Ireland in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. Her song '' Cross Your Heart'' came seventh but was a number 1 hit in the Irish charts. Prior to this Tina had hits in Ireland with ''I Don't Know How to Love Him'', number 1, 1971; ''Tell Me What's the Matter'', number 15, 1972 and ''When Morning Has Come'', number 20, 1973. Big Tom
Tom McBride (18 September 1936 – 17 April 2018), known as Big Tom, was an Irish country, traditional and easy listening singer, as well as a guitarist, and saxophone player. With a career spanning over six decades, he started his career in 1966 as the frontman of the Irish showband Big Tom and The Mainliners. Career On 1 February 2008, Big Tom began a 12-date tour of Ireland after doctors gave him the all clear. On 25 May, Big Tom performed for the closure night of the Galtymore dance hall in Cricklewood, London. On 27 July, Big Tom was the headline act at London's Irish Festival. On 23 November, Big Tom headlined the Claremorris Dance Festival weekend. In July 2009, K-MAC Records announced more dates in Ireland for Big Tom and the Mainliners which commenced in August. Paul Francis Gadd (born 8 May 1944), better known by his stage name Gary Glitter, is an English former singer who achieved fame and success during the 1970s and 1980s. His career ended after he was convicted of downloading child pornography in 1999. He was also convicted of child sexual abuse in 2006 and a series of sexual offences (including attempted rape) in 2015. Mouth & MacNeal
Mouth and MacNeal were a Dutch pop duo that enjoyed commercial success in the 1970s. Their recording of " How Do You Do" in 1972 topped the Dutch chart and became a US top ten hit and number 2 in Canada. They represented the Netherlands at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing third with the song " I See a Star", which went on to become a UK top ten hit. Career They were formed in 1971 when record producer Hans van Hemert brought together Big Mouth (born Willem Duyn) and Maggie MacNeal (born Sjoukje van't Spijker). Big Mouth had previously sung in a number of 1960s bands, including Speedway. MacNeal had released one solo single before teaming up with Big Mouth, a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", also produced by van Hemert. I See A Star
"I See a Star" (original Dutch title: "Ik zie een ster") was the entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1974, performed in English (the first time the Dutch entry was not entirely in Dutch) by Mouth & MacNeal. The song was composed by Hans van Hemert and written by Gerrit den Braber, a duo with several previous entries to their credit. Lyrically, the song is a love duet, with the singers telling each other that their love has helped them see the world in a new way. The "star" of the title is in other words to be found in one's lover's eyes. Musically it is a simple melody, which is embellished by a number of different instruments, including a barrel organ with a collection of puppets on it. The brightly coloured performance has become a favourite among Contest fans, with the song being selected as one of the non-winning "classics" to appear on the double-CD and double-DVD sets produced to support the ''Congratulations'' special of late 2005. "Any Dream Will Do" is a popular song written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for the 1968 musical '' Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat''. It is generally the beginning and the concluding song of the musical, sung by the title character of Joseph. The song has been sung by numerous performers. In 1969, it was released as the B-side of the 7-inch single "We Will Rock You" by child singer Christopher. Terrence Ross Jacks (born March 29, 1944) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer known for his 1974 hit song "Seasons in the Sun", an English adaptation of a song written by Belgian composer and singer Jacques Brel in 1961. Jacks is also an environmental activist, focused on pulp mill emissions in Howe Sound. Early life Terry Jacks was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jacks was the oldest of five boys and his father ran an architecture business in Winnipeg, a career Jacks later studied in university, before he become a musician.
