The functions of a ninja included siege and infiltration, ambush, reconnaissance, espionage, deception, and later bodyguarding.Kawakami, pp. 21–22 Antecedents may have existed as early as the 12th century. There is little evidence that they were assassins. In the unrest of the Sengoku period, '' jizamurai'' families, that is, elite peasant-warriors, in Iga Province and the adjacent Kōka District formed ''ikki'' – "revolts" or "leagues" – as a means of self-defense. They became known for their military activities in the nearby regions and sold their services as mercenaries and spies. It is from these areas that much of the knowledge regarding the ninja is drawn. Following the Tokugawa shogunate in the 17th century, the ninja faded into obscurity. Shogun Iemitsu Shinobi Tabi
was a pair of television ''jidaigeki'' series on TV Asahi in Japan. The first aired in 1990–1991 and the sequel in 1992–1993. Kunihiko Mitamura portrayed Tokugawa Iemitsu in both series. The show premiered on October 13, 1990, as an off-season replacement for the popular '' Abarenbo Shogun.'' It shared several cast members with ''Abarenbo Shogun'', including Reiko Takashima, Ayako Tanaka and some minor guest actors. The final episode aired on March 30, 1991. Sanada Taiheiki (TV Series)
is a Japanese television jidaigeki or period drama that was broadcast on NHK in 1985–1986. It is based on Shōtarō Ikenami's novel Sanada Taiheiki. The drama focuses on the history of the Sanada clan during the late Sengoku period. The complete DVD box is available. Plot In 1582, Oda and Tokugawa allied forces started an invasion of Takeda`s Kai Province. so the Takeda clan was in danger of extinction. Sanada Masayuki advised Takeda Katsuyori to abandon Kai Province and flee towards Masayuki`s Iwabitsu Castle. Katsuyori accepted his suggestion once, but he changed his mind and tried to flee towards Oyamada Nobushige`s Iwadono Castle, but was betrayed by Oyamada Nobushige and killed himself at Tenmokuzan. Shadow Warriors (TV Series)
is a Japanese television ''jidaigeki'' show featuring Sonny Chiba that ran for four seasons in the early 1980s. The first season was a reimagining of the 1980 film ''Kage no Gundan: Hattori Hanzō'' directed by Eiichi Kudo. Chiba played different ninja characters in each series. In the first series he played Hattori Hanzō III, in the second he played Tsuge Shinpachi, in the third he played Tarao Hanzō, and in the fourth series and in ''Bakumatsu Hen'' he played Hattori Hanzō XV. In the 2003 direct-to-DVD series ''Shin Kage no Gundan'' (''New Shadow Warriors'') he played Hattori Hanzō I. The Yagyu Conspiracy
is a Japanese television jidaigeki (period drama) that was broadcast from 1978 to 1979. It is adapted from the 1978 film ''Shogun's Samurai'' starring Sonny Chiba, who reprises his role in the series. Plot After the death of Tokugawa Hidetada, his sons Tokugawa Iemitsu and Tokugawa Tadanaga begin to fight over the inheritance. The Yagyu clan of Edo, led by Yagyū Munenori, supports Iemitsu, and Iemitsu is eventually appointed the third shogun. However, Nobutsuna Matsudaira fears the Yagyu clan and tries to prevent them from gaining power. On the other hand, Shōshō Ayamaro Karasuma, who tried to divide the Tokugawa shogunate due to the conflict between Iemitsu and Tadanaga, has not given up that hope.
