Council Bluffs is a city in and the county seat of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. ''The Hawk Eye'' is a general-circulation newspaper based in Burlington, Iowa, United States, and bills itself as "''Iowa's Oldest Newspaper''." History The newspaper traces its roots to the ''Wisconsin Territorial Gazette and Burlington Advertiser'', which was established July 10, 1837, by James Clarke and Cyrus Jacobs. Clarke and Jacobs moved to Burlington from Belmont, Wisconsin, when the capital of the Wisconsin Territory was moved to Burlington. The pair did printing work for the territorial government, and were aligned with the Democratic Party. In 1838, a separate Iowa Territory was created, and Burlington was named its first capital. ''The Gazette'' is a daily print newspaper published in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The newspaper is distributed throughout northeastern and east-central Iowa, including the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City metropolitan areas. It was formerly called ''The Cedar Rapids Gazette''. As of September 2019, ''The Gazette'' has a circulation of 32,616 for the daily edition and 37,860 for the Sunday edition. History The ''Evening Gazette'' was first published on January 10, 1883. Estherville is a city in Emmet County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,904 in the 2020 census, a decline from 6,656 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Emmet County. History Emmet County was initially created by an act of the Iowa Legislature in 1851. The area that is now Estherville had its first settlers around 1856 and into 1857. The city was selected as the county seat in 1859, and was eventually incorporated in 1881. Estherville was named after Esther A. Ridley, one of the first white female settlers in the area. Many of Estherville's current residents are the descendants of the original Scandinavian, German and Irish immigrants that arrived in the community in the 1870s.
