Powell Mountain
Powell Mountain (or "Powells Mountain") is a mountain ridge of the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians of the Appalachian Mountains. It is a long and narrow ridge, running northeast to southwest, from about Norton, Virginia, to near Tazewell, Tennessee. It separates the Clinch River basin and the Powell River basin of Powell Valley. It was named for an 18th-century explorer. Geography Powell Mountain's elevation averages between , with its highest points above . The highest point is Bowling Knob (), near the northern end of the mountain. Powell Mountain is about long. It is broken by one stream only, the North Fork Clinch River. Old Rag Mountain
Old Rag Mountain is a mountain near Sperryville, Virginia, Sperryville in Madison County, Virginia, Madison County, Virginia. A part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the peak is located within Shenandoah National Park and is the most popular hiking destination within the park. In contrast to most mountains of the Blue Ridge, Old Rag has an exposed (rocky) summit. Geology Old Rag Mountain is underlain by Old Rag Granite, named for its ubiquitous exposure on the mountain, formed during the Grenville Orogeny about a billion years ago. About 400 million years after the Grenville orogeny during the Catoctin Formation, deposition of basaltic magma occurred during the formation of the Iapetus Ocean, forming a layer of Greenschist, greenstone over the granite. Mary's Rock
Mary's Rock, also known as Marys Rock, is a tall mountain in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, United States. The peak is just south of the Thornton Gap Entrance of the park, and north of the taller Pinnacle. Mary's Rock is the eighth highest peak in Shenandoah National Park. Hiking Mary's Rock Two trails lead to the summit of Mary's Rock. One which starts from the Panorama Visitor Center and the other which starts from the Meadow Spring Parking Area. The trail from Panorama is somewhat longer and steeper, and is generally considered more difficult. It follows the white-blazed Appalachian Trail. Neighbor Mountain is a mountain in Page and Rappahannock Counties, Virginia, near the city of Luray. It is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its summit lies in Page County, within Shenandoah National Park. Geology Geologically speaking, the mountain is situated in the northern subprovince of the Blue Ridge Province of the Appalachian Highlands. It is part of the Crystalline Appalachians. Neighbor Mountain is separated from parallel Knob Mountain to the west by a stream known as Jeremy's Run. Political boundaries The crest of the northern arm of Neighbor Mountain forms part of the border between Page and Rappahanock Counties. Pignut Mountain
Pignut Mountain is a mountain in Rappahannock County, Virginia. It is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its summit lies within Shenandoah National Park. Geology Geologically speaking, the mountain is situated in the northern subprovince of the Blue Ridge Province of the Appalachian Highlands. It is part of the Crystalline Appalachians. Pignut Mountain is separated from the main Blue Ridge by a low gap. The gap is the result of relatively rapid erosion along a geological fault. Battle Mountain (Virginia)
Battle Mountain is an igneous mountain in Rappahannock County, Virginia. The eastern slope is generally considered to reside in the unincorporated town of Amissville, Virginia while the western slope is generally considered to be within Castleton, Virginia. The entire mountain including the summit lies within private property at an elevation of 1,162 ft (354.2 m). Geology Tectonic emplacement and geochronology It is an extinct volcano dating to the Neoproterozoic and is approximately 704 million years old (+/- 4 million years) as dated using the U- Pb zircon crystal geochronology method. Buck Mountain (Virginia)
Buck Mountain is a summit in the Free Union area of Albemarle County, Virginia. Its elevation is 1,358 feet and 414 meters. It was named for the abundance of deer in the area. Buck Mountain is bounded by 776, 667 and 601, and 671 roads, as well as Buck Mountain Creek. History The Buck Mountain Road was completed in 1748. Buck Mountain Episcopal Church was built in 1747 for the Frederick Parish. It is considered a "rare surviving example" from colonial Virginia of a simple wooden Anglican parish church. It was moved in 1860, before the American Civil War, to its current location. A cemetery was established in Earlysville in the Buck Mountain area, along its creek. The history of the cemetery is not known, so it has been called Blue Mountain Creek Cemetery and Blue Mountain Cemetery. High Knob (Blue Ridge, Virginia)
High Knob is a peak of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Warren and Fauquier counties, Virginia. Geography The peak is located in between Manassas Gap to the north and Chester Gap to the south, just east of Front Royal. The summit of the peak is located in Warren County and is the highest point of the Blue Ridge north of Shenandoah National Park which is just south of the peak across Chester Gap. The Appalachian Trail crosses the eastern slope of the peak. A housing development occupies the summit and the western slope. The mountain was also a strategic location used during the Battle of Wapping Heights during the American Civil War.
