Dolakha District
Dolakha, often known as Dolkha or Dholkha (Nepal Bhasa:दोलखा जिल्ला)), a part of Bagmati Province, is one of the seventy-seven districts of Nepal. The district, with Charikot as its district headquarters, covers an area of and had a population of 204,229 in 2001 and 186,557 in 2011. It is a district with a strong religious affiliation. It is popularly known amongst most Nepalese for the temple of Dolakha Bhimeshawor. The name Dolkha arose from Newar Community. In the classical Nepal Bhasa language "Dol" or "Dwal" means Thousand (Hajar), and "Kha" means houses or temple (Ghar va mandirharu) which means "The place that have thousand houses and temples" (Hajar ghar va mandir bhaeko thau). Bagmati Province ( ne, बाग्मती प्रदेश, ''Bagmati Pradesh'') is one of the seven provinces of Nepal established by the constitution of Nepal. Dolakha Bhimsen Temple
Dolakha Bhimsen Temple () is located in the Bhimeshwar municipality of Dolakha in Nepal, approximately east of Charikot. The temple is roofless in the center and it houses a triangular-shaped stone idol of Bhimsen. The idol is believed to resemble three deities: Bhimeshwar in the morning, Mahadeva throughout the day, and Narayana in the evening. The temple attracts around 5,000 worshippers every week. Mythology The temple is devoted to Bhimsen, the second brother among the Pandavas depicted in the Hindu mythology of Mahabharata. It is believed that Pandavas spent their twelve years of exile in Dolakha. According to local legend, twelve porters made a three-stoned stove to cook their rice near a temple. When they noticed that only one side of the rice was cooked, they flipped the rice over. As the cooked rice came in contact with the triangular-shaped black stone, it turned raw. The Ancient Monument Protection Act 1956 (Prachin Smarak Samrakshan Ain 2013 BS) has defined monuments as “Any temple, monument, house, Devalaya, Shivalaya, Muth, monastery, vihar, stupa etc that is older than 100 years and has historical significance is monument.” The Ancient Monument Protection Act 1956 and Ancient Monument Protection Rules 1990 have provisioned the Department of Archaeology which is the authorized legal entity to protect such monuments.
