This is a list of metropolitan areas by population in India. As per the Constitution of India, a metropolitan area is defined as an area having a population of 10 lakh or more, comprised in one or more districts, and consisting of two or more municipalities or panchayats or other contiguous areas, specified by the Governor by a public notification to be a Metropolitan area. List The list is updated for cities wherever metropolitan area data is available with the corresponding sources. All population data correspond to the 2011 census of India, 2011 census. For regions that were expanded post-2011 and no updated population data is available, data corresponding to the old urban area limits as per the 2011 census has been considered. Kolkata Metropolitan Region
The Kolkata Metropolitan Area (abbreviated KMA; formerly Calcutta Metropolitan Area), also known as Greater Kolkata, is the urban agglomeration of the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the third most populous metropolitan area in India after Delhi and Mumbai. The area is administered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). History What is now the KMA was first legally defined as the ''Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Area'' in the schedule of the ''Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Area (Use and Development of Land) Control Act, 1965'' (West Bengal Act XIV of 1965). Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) is the metropolitan region around the city of Pune. According to practical purposes, PMR comprises two Municipal Corporations of PMC, PCMC and three Cantonment Boards, spread over an area of 7,256.46 km2. The population of the region as per 2011 census was 7,541,946. It Contributes 80% GDP to Pune District and 9.2% GDP to Maharashtra. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is the planning and development authority of the region formed. PMRDA is headed by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is the urban planning agency of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
