Sierre - Château Bellevue
Sierre (; german: Siders, ; frp, Siérro, ) is the capital municipality of the district of Sierre, located in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It has a population of 16,332. Sierre is nicknamed City of the Sun (french: Cité du Soleil) for its average of 300 days of sunshine a year. It is the last official French-speaking city in Valais before the French–German language border of the canton located at the forêt de Finges, a few kilometres after the town. A German-speaking minority lives in Sierre, counting for around 8% of the population. History Sierre was first mentioned around 800 as ''Sidrium'', though a 12th-century document refers to the village being founded in 515. In 1179 it was mentioned as ''Sirro'' and in 1393 as ''Syder''. Prehistory The area around the modern town, especially Gerunden hill, was settled very early. François Genoud (26 October 1915 – 30 May 1996) was a noted Swiss financier and a principal benefactor of the Nazi diaspora through the ODESSA escape network and supporter of Middle Eastern militant groups during the post-World War II 20th century. In 1992, Genoud told a London newspaper "My views have not changed since I was a young man. Hitler was a great leader, and if he had won the war, the world would be a better place today." ''Manfred: A dramatic poem'' is a closet drama written in 1816–1817 by Lord Byron. It contains supernatural elements, in keeping with the popularity of the ghost story in England at the time. It is a typical example of a Gothic fiction. Charles-Albert Antille (18 October 1944 – 4 June 2024) was a Swiss businessman and politician of the Radical Democratic Party (PRD). Biography Born in Sierre on 18 October 1944, Antille's father was from Anniviers and his mother was from Oberwallis. He grew up in Saint-Luc. He completed his studies in Sierre and took part in a business apprenticeship in Brig-Glis. He went on to work for AMAG Automobil- und Motoren and the . Antille served on the communal council of Sierre from 1985 to 2001. In 1992, he was elected president of Sierre. He served in this position until 2000, when he was defeated by Manfred Stucky. From 1998 to 2003, he served in the National Council. He joined the legislature succeeding Pascal Couchepin, who joined the Federal Council.
