This is a list of lighthouses in the China, People's Republic of China, which includes mainland China and the two Special administrative regions of China, special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. Lighthouses in Mainland China Lighthouses in Hong Kong Following the History of Hong Kong (1800s–1930s), establishment of British Hong Kong as a trade port in 1841, the first lighthouses in Hong Kong were planned and built to assist international navigation. The first lighthouse to enter service was Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse in April 1875, which was operated by lighthouse keepers who received specialist training in London and lived in the lighthouse in one-month shifts. A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of physical structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lens (optics), lenses and to serve as a beacon for navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways. Waglan Lighthouse
Waglan Island (Chinese: 橫瀾島 Wanglan-dou) is a member of the Po Toi group of islands in Hong Kong. Waglan Lighthouse, a declared monument dating to 1893 stands there. Since 1989 Waglan lighthouse is automated and Waglan Island is uninhabited. The island also hosts a ground of meteorological observation and recording for the Hong Kong Observatory. Climate History Pre-1900 Before the 1840s, there was not much sea traffic in Hong Kong. But after the Treaties of Nanking, Peking and Tientsin from 1842-1860, the Qing government was forced to open more trading ports. Hong Kong was one such port that became strategic for merchants arriving from Europe, hence lighthouses were needed to guide ships safely to port. Landscape Crisis Of The Guia Fortress
The landscape crisis of the Guia Fortress refers to the landscape conservation crisis of the Guia Fortress, a part of the Historic Centre of Macau and a symbol of the city. This current crisis represents a threat to Macau's World Cultural Heritage. In 2005, the Guia Fortress was inscribed on the World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Centre of Macau. In the same year, the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) of the People's Republic of China repealed "The Outer Harbor and New Land Reclamation Urban Planning Charter" and "The Bylaws of South Bay Reorganization", two ordinances for the protection of the local World Heritage Site, which designate the area around the Penha Hill as free land for development and approve the construction of tall buildings around the Guia Fortress causing damage to the landscape, some of which will be much taller than Penha Hill when completed, undermining the Fortress' World Heritage status. The Maritime Safety Administration of the People's Republic of China (China MSA or CMSA; ) is a law enforcement and rescue agency of departmental grade (正司局级) under the Ministry of Transportation. Cantonese is the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, a Sinitic languages, Sinitic language belonging to the Sino-Tibetan language family.
