William Elmer Holt (October 14, 1884 – March 1, 1945) was an American politician. He served as the tenth Governor of Montana from 1935 to 1937. Biography Holt was born in Savannah, Missouri, and moved with his family to a ranch in Miles City, Montana. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1902. He married Lora Howe and they had two children. Career Holt was elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 1912, and served one term. He was a member of the Montana State Senate from 1933 to 1935, and was chosen as president pro tempore in 1935. He became governor upon the death of Governor Frank Henry Cooney on December 15, 1935. Tom Kane (23 August 1878 – 20 March 1939) was a Canadian-born American politician who served in the Montana Senate as a member of the Republican party. He also served as the acting Lieutenant Governor of Montana from 1933 to 1934. Early life Tom Kane was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, on 23 August 1878 to Matthew Kane and Francis Simpson. He married Grace Idora Laws on 6 June 1909 and had three children. Political career Tom Kane was first elected to the Montana Senate in 1915 and ultimately became President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1929 to 1934. On 13 March 1933, upon the resignation of Governor John Edward Erickson in order to take his newly elected seat as a US Senator for Montana, his Lieutenant Governor Frank Henry Cooney became Governor. Frank Henry Cooney (December 31, 1872 – December 15, 1935) was a Canadian-American politician and businessman who served as the ninth governor of Montana from 1933 to 1935. Early life Cooney was born in Norwood, Ontario, Canada, and received a limited education in Catholic schools. He dropped out of school at the age of fourteen and worked as a delivery boy in a grocery store and for a short time, he tried working with his father in the nursery business. Career Cooney moved to Butte, Montana in July, 1891, and found employment in a grocery store. He then found a position in the wholesale department of the Davidson Grocery Company.
