2-inch Mortar
The Ordnance SBML two-inch mortar, or more commonly, just "two-inch mortar", was a British mortar issued to the British Army and the Commonwealth armies, that saw use during the Second World War and later. It was more portable than larger mortars, and had greater range and firepower than rifle grenades. Its main purpose was to produce smoke for cover and through high trajectory and HE shell, engage targets "immune to small arms fire". Design The two-inch mortar was one of a number of small mortars brought into service by European nations between the two World Wars. Due to its small size, and for simplicity, the mortar had no forward strut or bipod like larger designs needed. L9A1 51 Mm Light Mortar
The L9A1 51 mm light mortar was a man-portable platoon-level mortar used by the British Army from 1988 to 2007. The 51 mm mortar replaced the World War II-vintage 2-inch mortar in the late 1980s. It was due to be phased out by the use of the 40 mm L17A2 underslung grenade launcher (UGL) mounted on the L85A2 service rifle; however, operational experience has led to the decision to replace it with a 60mm mortar. The Hirtenberger AG M6-895 60 mm mortar was procured in 2007 as an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) to replace the current 51 mm mortar on current operations. Design Ammunition for the 51 mm mortar has a small, ring-pull safety pin on the side of the nose-fuze. The fuze remains unarmed until the pin is withdrawn. The RM-38 was a Soviet 50 mm light infantry mortar. The barrel was clamped at two elevation angles only - 45 and 75 degrees. Range variations were made by altering a sleeve round the base of the barrel. This sleeve opened a series of gas ports which bled off exhaust gases and so determined the range. The project was deemed overly complex and expensive, and was only produced for a short time, before being replaced by the Model 1939. Despite the small number produced, some fell into German hands in 1941, who introduced them as the 5 cm Granatwerfer 205/1(r). Development The RM-38 or 50-RM 38 (50-mm company mortar model 1938) was based on the British Stokes mortar. It was further developed as the RM-39 and RM40. Type 89 Grenade Discharger
The , inaccurately and colloquially known as a knee mortar by Allied forces, is a Japanese grenade launcher or light mortar that was widely used in the Pacific Theater of World War II. It got the nickname the "knee mortar" because of an erroneous Allied belief that these launchers could be fired by propping its plate against the leg. However, anyone trying to fire it this way would receive a severe bruise (or sometimes a broken femur) from its hefty recoil. The Imperial Japanese Army considered the Type 89 grenade launcher to be an effective weapon, often employing two to four pieces as part of a typical rifle platoon. Type 10 Grenade Discharger
was a Japanese smoothbore, muzzle loaded weapon used during the Second World War. It first entered service in 1921. The Type 10 has a range of , greater than other grenade dischargers of that time. It had a range control device at the base of the barrel in the form of a graduated thimble by which a gas port at the base of the tube could be varied in size. For shorter ranges, part of the propellant gases escape to the side. Due to a translation error, the Type 10 was called the "knee mortar" by the Americans. The manual for the mortar instructed the troops to carry the mortar on the upper thigh, with the base plate attached to the belt and the barrel running down the thigh. The 5 cm ''leichter Granatwerfer'' 36 (5 cm leGrW 36) was a light mortar used by Nazi Germany during World War II. History The mortar's development was started in 1934 by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG and it was adopted for service in 1936. Its intended role was to engage pockets of resistance that were beyond a hand grenade's throwing range. Until 1938, it used a complicated telescopic sight. By 1941, the ''Granatwerfer'' 36 was seen as too complex for its intended role, the shell was too light and the range too short. It was used as a platoon mortar and operated by a 3-man team. The Lance Grenades de 50 mm modèle 37 was a French light infantry mortar designed and produced shortly before the Second World War. Design The modèle 37 was issued during 1939 to replace rifle grenades in infantry platoons. It was a simple weapon with a fixed elevation of 45°, with the range being set by twisting a ring on the base which varied the diameter of gas vents on the tube. It consisted of a tube, baseplate and bipod. Although light and mobile it was short ranged and fired a small projectile. After testing in 1937 an initial order for 21,950 mortars was placed in January 1938. This order was later changed to 50,000 mortars at the outbreak of war with all mortars to be completed by January 1941. However, only 2,900 had been produced by June 1940 and few had been put into service due to a shortage of ammunition.
