Põlva Parish
Põlva Parish ( et, Põlva vald) is a rural municipality in Põlva County, southeastern Estonia. On 1 January 2009, it had a population of 3,882 and an area of 228.63 km². In October 2013, the town of Põlva (formerly a separate municipality) was merged into Põlva Parish, becoming the centre of it. Põlva County ( et, Põlva maakond or ''Põlvamaa'') is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is situated in south-eastern part of the country and borders Tartu, Valga and Võru counties. 28,507 people live in Põlva County – constituting 2.3% of the total population in Estonia (as of January 2013). Tallinn () is the most populous and capital city of Estonia. Tamme-Lauri Oak
The Tamme-Lauri oak ( et, Tamme-Lauri tamm, vro, Tammõ-Lauri tamm) is a large common oak. It is the thickest and oldest tree in Estonia and is located in Antsla Parish, Võru County. The height of the tree is , and the circumference is , measured from the ground. According to researchers, the tree was planted around 1326. The oak has been hit repeatedly by lightning, damaging the branches and hollowing out the center. During restoration in the 1970s an old hideout of the Forest Brothers was found inside the cavity. Seven people could stand inside the tree before it was filled with of reinforced concrete. The tree is still viable, although it has lost its top because of the lightning strikes. The name of the Tamme-Lauri oak comes from the Tamme-Lauri farm, which in turn got its name from the spirit that was thought to live in the oak, bringing bad and sometimes good luck.
