Hippopotamids
Hippopotamidae is a family (biology), family of stout, Pachydermata, naked-skinned, and semiaquatic artiodactyl mammals, possessing three-chambered stomachs and walking on four toes on each foot. While they resemble suinae, pigs physiologically, their closest living relatives are the cetaceans. They are formally referred to as hippopotamids. There are two living species of hippopotamid in two genera; the pygmy hippo, ''Choeropsis liberiensis'' of the forests of west Africa, and the common hippo, ''Hippopotamus amphibius''. The term ''hippopotamus'' can also be applied to hippopotamids in general, although it is most frequently used for the common hippo and its respective genus. On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+07:00, UTC+7), a major earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2–9.3 struck with an epicenter, epicentre off the west coast of Aceh in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The Submarine earthquake, undersea megathrust earthquake, known in the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma plate and the Indian plate, and reached a Modified Mercalli intensity scale, Mercalli intensity of IX in some areas. A massive tsunami with waves up to high, known as the Boxing Day Tsunami after the Boxing Day holiday, or as the Asian Tsunami, devastated communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean, killing an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries, violently in Aceh (Indonesia), and severely in Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu (India), and Khao Lak (Thailand). Moo Deng (, , ; born 10 July 2024) is a pygmy hippopotamus living in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Si Racha, Chonburi, Thailand. She became a popular internet meme at two months of age after images of her went viral online in September 2024. Background Moo Deng was born on 10 July 2024 to parents Tony and Jonah. Billy (pygmy Hippopotamus)
Billy, also known as William Johnson Hippopotamus (before 1927October 11, 1955), was a pygmy hippopotamus given to United States President Calvin Coolidge. Captured in Liberia, he was given to Coolidge by Harvey S. Firestone in 1927. Billy spent most of his life in the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. In addition to his fame as an exotic presidential pet—which afforded him a trip to the 1939 New York World's Fair—Billy is also notable as the common ancestor to most pygmy hippos in American zoos.
